they're all nice towns, but I missed the part in the OP that said they wanted 10+ acres. Are there many lots that size in any of those towns?

Haddam and East Haddam both have large lots. There are a few in Deep river as well, quite a few in Killingworth. Really in the 5-15 acre lot size you will have somewhat limited choices in CT, but in many rural and suburban towns at least a few lots that size come up every year at least north of Hartford and East of the River where I look.

To the OP. I saw your thread over in the MA forum went off track. So I will post this here. My mothers family comes from Western Ma, and a number of my relatives still live there. As they did mention North Hampton area is nice. If you want to be in the actual Berkshires, I would recommend towns in the Great Barrington or Pittsifield area as that's where hospitals etc are located. Out side of those areas it gets rural real fast and things like Broad band become an issue. I have relatives in Beckett and Lee, and both have to rely on cell and satellite service for internet.

Don't have much to offer on NH but I have loved visiting the Burlington area of VT and with all the colleges there I doubt acceptance of your family would be much of an issue.

I have a family friend who is white with two adopted Chinese daughters. He has lived in Glastonbury CT and Cape Elizabeth Maine, and had no issues either place. He liked Maine so much they moved back there after living here in CT for 10 years. I would think many of the areas around Portland would be excellent in Maine. The number of large lots 1/2 hour west of Portland is fairly large. One of my old roomates has a lovely 8 acre farm near Biddeford for instance.

EDIT: Actually, there are more listings than I thought. In very rural towns like Sharon and Bethlehem, there are decent homes under $700k with acreage in the 10-20 range.

As has been stated, cell service can be a problem.

If you go to even more rural areas like the northeast corner, you could be very far from amenities and hospitals.
Bethlehem would be an interesting choice. It is about as close to civilization as you can get while being very rural. Relatively low taxes. But cell service would be a big problem outside of the route 61 area.

Even parts of Watertown are quite rural with very large lots.

Litchfield, ct. has everything you are looking for. Litchfield County has many towns, not all good for what you need.
