I know Great Schools calculates ONLY standardized test results, and is not an overall quality or experience measure. But why do all of New Milford's schools rank consistently low to mediocre? Compared to neighboring towns in CT and NY, with the exception of Dover/Wingdale, it seems pretty stark.

To that end, I went to a small school district in Dutchess Co. currently rated a 7 and I would personally rank it well below that in terms of opportunities and education quality.

What about New Milford in particular is creating these low rankings? Does anybody have any experience with Northville Elementary? Thanks.

I have several family members and some friends who are currently dealing with the NM school system and I am not impressed with what I hear. NM is a huge town that has a lot of economic diversity and parts of it are very much like Dover/Wingdale in many ways. I would hesitate to say the economic diversity drives the school ratings because there is plenty of that in some of the districts in mid to northern Dutchess as well and they are relatively well ranked. I think there is some instability in the educator population and questionable/inconsistent administration strategy in NM as well that makes it less desirable relative to towns like Brookfield and New Fairfield.

Northville's class sizes are on the large side and IMO the school is likely to be overcrowded once the 2013-2014 kids hit school in a couple of years.

We have discussed the questionable rankings on Greatschools here many times in the past. We have seen known problem schools rated higher than known quality schools. All we can do is scratch our heads and give you advice. In general New Milford schools are considered to be average by Connecticut standards. Not bad but not top notch either. I know a couple of people that live there and they were generally satisfied with the quality of education their kids received. You could check the state's Edsight website for objective information on Connecticut schools. Jay

We're considering moving to NM as well, we have a child entering HS in the fall. Can anyone tell us about the environment there; is it inclusive/diverse, good balance of sports and arts? What kind of clubs and activities do they have?
