I'm in the market to buy a house no more than $300,000. I am born and raised in Stamford and obviously I know I cant afford much with this price in Stamford, Norwalk or some surrounding areas. Here is the list of towns/cities I can purchase a house from even though I know some of these I have no shot.

Bethel
Brookfield
Danbury
Darien
Greenwich
New Canaan
New Fairfield
Newtown
Norwalk
Redding
Ridgefield
Sherman
Stamford
Weston
Westport
Wilton

I also work out of Norwalk so I know I would have to commute so the least aggravating commute the better. I'm looking for quiet, cozy, good restaurants, decent schools, shopping/supermarkets close by.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only Bethel is going to meet your criteria with your budget.

I'm not too familiar with Bethel but I know they have a bunch of decent houses there. I hear good things though. People are telling me to stay away from Danbury because its a city and it has a lot of bad areas but they also have a lot of properties for sale.

I know that listing on Woodward Ave. and that is a pretty bad area of Norwalk.

I do not think the OP is going to get anything in Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Weston, Westport or Wilton for their price. That would limit them to Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, Newtown, Norwalk, Sherman or Stamford.

Since you want "decent schools", I would not necessarily recommend Danbury, Norwalk or Stamford. Sherman is pretty far away from Norwalk and there are no major highways to it so I would not recommend looking there either. That leaves you Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown and New Fairfield. I would begin in Bethel since it is the closest to Norwalk, then branch out from there if you can't find what you are looking for. Jay

I still have to visit the areas but does Bethel have most things a small city would have as far as shopping stores, supermarkets, hardware stores, nightlife?

I am not sure Bethel has much nightlife. For that you would have to go to Danbury. It does have supermarkets and stores as well as some restaurants. It is kind of hard to find nightlife in any town that is quiet with good schools. Those tend to be family oriented and families are not looking for bars or clubs to hand out in. Jay

Bethel is more suburban (smaller lots, some apartments and condos) and closer to Danbury and Norwalk. Newtown is more rural (larger lots, a few farms) and small town feel. It is a little further away from urban areas. Jay
