Guilford, Branford, Higganum, Colchester, Milford

I would say priorities are schools, then quality of people. I want down to earth in general.

I don't know much about these towns. I've just been looking on a map and am trying to find something with a reasonable commute without being in the rich sections of greenwich, westport, etc.

Price of home isn't an issue.

Whatever you can tell me, fire away. Thanks!

It sounds like you will be commuting to Fairfield County on a daily basis. If this is so, and since price is not an issue, I would suggest Woodbridge, Orange or Bethany (they all share the excellent Amity school district). Guilford, Branford and other towns east of New Haven will be a rough commute to western Connecticut over the Q Bridge on 95 - the Merritt/Wilbur Cross Parkway won't be much better during rush hour. Milford is another good option - less expensive than the Amity area (the 3 towns listed above) and good schools.

Other down to earth towns you can check out are Shelton, Trumbull, Monroe and Oxford. All of these towns have good schools and are within easy commuting distance to Fairfield County.

If you are commuting to NYC, Milford is about as far up as I would go, but I know people who commute from Meriden, Watertown and New Milford (2+ hours).

If you will be commuting to New Haven, then eastern Connecticut (Branford, Guilford, Madison, North Haven, Hamden) and possibly the Hartford metro (South Windsor, Glastonbury, Rocky Hill) will be your best bet.

Sorry for the wide range of options - I just don't know where you will be commuting to.

I agree, if you are commuting into New York, then I would go with Milford. It is a nice small city with good schools and a lot of nice neighborhoods. Milford has great shopping, wonderful parks and beaches and a lot of family activities.

All of the towns mentioned are very nice and I would not hestiate to live in any of them. Guilford to me is the nicest with excellent schools and a wonderful small town charm. JMHO Jay

oh duh, I forgot to type NYC as my commute.
I didn't realize that guilford and branford would be a 2 hour commute.

I'll have to take a closer look at Milford and the other towns mentioned.

Thanks a bunch.

Milford is 2nd to last stop (3rd when West Haven arrives) on NY-New Haven train. East of New Haven would involve an additional train.

not rich, but realistic. I'm not expecting to find the perfect everything for $400k.
I'm in NY suburb, so I know it's comparable to here. I know there are premiums for certain areas. I will take less house for more money if schools are tops.

Milford seems like it will be a bit of a hike too.

I am looking at fairfield also. Is this a nice town? Since it is close to Greenwich and Westport, I am assuming it's not as down to earth as other towns?

The home prices lower as you get away from NYC. Most expensive will be Greenwich, Stamford, Darien and Westport. Fairfield is also pricey, but less so than the other communities. Once you get out of Fairfield County, home prices are a bit less in towns like Milford and Orange.

Fairfield is a very nice town close to everything. You have all the amenities you need with metro north going right through town. Fairfield in general is less pretentious than many Fairfield County towns, but you will still find people with that attitude (as you would anywhere). There is a wide range of options to choose from in town since there are middle class neighborhoods and extremely wealthy ones as well. Schools are excellent, and for $400k, you can probably find a small home that needs a little TLC.
