I understand what median is. As I pointed out, we are talking relative affluence. Compared to the US median income, the rest of Connecticut does very well. It is still an affluent state even without Fairfield County. That is a fact. Jay

This is completely false.

Without Fairfield County CT is just average. And without the tax revenue from FFC the state can't pay its bills period.

This is the thing people must understand, the Democrats have a tax scheme that transfers money from the wealthy to the poor and those on government assistance. The city of Hartford is an example of this. It gets all its revenue from outside towns while its residents get by on government assistance.

Clearly this type of wealth transfer scheme is unstable! All it takes is for enough wealthy to leave and the system implodes!

That is what we are witnessing now, the rich are leaving and the system is imploding. Bankruptcy here we come!!

However with each day that passes, CT becomes less affluent...

Does your mom need to get into NYC to see her senior friends or somewhere in Westchester?

There are two towns near Danbury that are more affordable than the others. They are Bethel and Brookfield. Bethel being the most affordable. Both towns are easily accessible to I-84 into NY.
The over 55 communities in Bethel and Brookfield are more expensive than Danbury! I've noticed some reasonable condos in those areas though. My price point in under $400,000, and yes, I want to keep mom close to Westchester County. Thanks!

Didn't Gov. Molloy say the money will continue to flow into the poor areas (he mentioned the cities, I forgot which ones) in his budget revision statement? Your post alludes to my first post, the middle class will be forced to pay the bills. Last year I met a CT. couple while we were all looking at a condo during an open house in Westchester County, when I mentioned I was looking in CT. also, ,they said "forget it.". Now I know what they meant.

Uh... as bad as Connecticut may be Westchester is even worse. Most of New York is. As I am sure you have seen, New York has layer upon layer of dysfunctional government so their taxes make Connecticut's look like a positive bargain. I would assume that is why you are considering moving here. You should note that even if the local property taxes are raised to help pay for the teacher pensions, it is unlikely that increase is going to bring the taxes anywhere near what Westchester taxes are. It may be more like a couple of hundred bucks a year more depending on the property. Keep in mind that Connecticut does not have a county level of government. We also do not have layers of local governments (towns, hamlets, villages, school districts, etc.). That helps keep the taxes down in comparison. So if you are used to New York level of taxes, even with an increase, Connecticut will most likely be significantly less. And that Connecticut couple I am sure realized that when they actually looked closer at the taxes in Westchester. Jay

NY taxes are runaway for sure but their pensions are 100% funded.

But haven't the rich been leaving CT. and moving to FL. in droves due to the increase in estate taxes? Who will be left to pay for the teacher's pensions, the poor, and whatever else CT doesn't have the cash to pay for, the middle class and the retirees? CT wants the Indians to build a new casino, but the last time I was at Foxwoods, a big part of the casino was closed during the week to cut down expenses, so how is a new casino going to add revenue? Since people are moving out and taxes are going up, who will be left to gamble, and the people who stay probably won't have the money to gamble after tax hikes?
CT is in a lot of trouble if people are moving out and others are afraid to move in.
Everyone's looking to leave Jeena. I hear it everywhere now, on this forum, friends, relatives, neighbors, you name it, not just typical retiring baby boomers. It was never like this before. Best of luck.

Funny, I have not heard anyone seriously thinking of leaving. Must be different crowds we hang out with. Jay

As someone who works + owns a business, CT is hardly a tax friendly state for me. However to describe it as on a Detroit style downward slope is not entirely accurate either.

CT has been lagging behind due to the wrong policy choices, coupled with financial woes that have kept kicking the can down the road. With an effective Governor/leadership, the state can turn itself around. Countries, states, and cities rise and fall - CT's case is no different.

Regardless of the doom and gloom talk, Ct is still better than NY, RI - Worse than MA from an economic development. QoL standpoint. Now I understand that many of you are long time CT residents and seeing a relative decline, which I don't doubt at all. However the reality is that CT not headed towards an imminent collapse.
