I did CT to NC and back to CT. The grass is never greener - it's just different grass. IMO moving to NC now equals being very late to the party. There are other up and coming cities that are much cheaper, if you're looking for just a simple move to save some money.

But since people do what they're going to do anyway... Look for hidden costs before planning a move : utility security deposits because you are new to the area, a year long wait list for daycares like we faced in NC (so basically a year that one parent is unable to work), daycare costs in the Triangle are much higher than you think, the cost of running your air conditioner 24/7 from May to September ($200+ a month for us), the cost of maintaining your car and gas because you need to drive everywhere in NC, etc.

When friends of mine suggest they might want to move and ask me for advice, I tell them to first set a strict budget and save save save because your financial habits up here will follow you when you move to a different area, and NC is not as cheap as you think it is based off internet articles from 2013.

If you all decide to move down there and vote in the same politicians you wished to leave behind, then what's the sense of going? Cary NC has so many notherners I think it was jokingly nicknamed Central Area Relocated Yankees, might as well stay in Connecticut.

And please skip Virginia, last thing we need is your high tax, liberal, anti-gun rhetoric.

Most people who leave the Northeast for the south miss it to some degree, I know I did for a long time but truth is the Northeast has been ruined by high taxes, Democratic governments, insanely priced real estate, and it's justified by saying it costs so much because NYC is right next door. NYC is a dirty and old island of boroughs in which case 3 out of the 5 don't even get any recognition, the should just rename it Manhattan and Brooklyn City.

If anyone is considering the Raleigh-Durham area because of perceived lower cost of living with good education, I would guess that it would now be a missed opportunity. There has been so much development of the pharma/biotech industry in that area -- I haven't done the economic research (look elsewhere for hard facts), but having been in the industry for a decade, I have a strong sense that the area has seen a large increase in average salary. There must be lots of recent McMansions down there with high price tags. Again, this could be a false impression, just seems inevitable to me given the industry explosion.

If you want low cost living at a high standard, my personal recommendation would be to check out the suburbs of Cincinnati.

The tuition benefit is very generous. Good luck whatever you decide.
Yes, the tuition benefit and super low-cost but quality healthcare is what keeps me at Yale.

This thread has been so helpful! We are kind of taking a step back to evaluate things. Family is in CT and it's hard to leave family, but if need be, we will find a new state to call home. I'm so glad for this forum. Thank you.

The rumor is they'll eventually go to free tuition.
