Cambium- I just saw today's announcement that you are one of C-D's recent contest winners for most engaging poster--and you've got that $500 to spend! Many congratulations, it's well deserved.

Thanks! It was quite a shock when I opened up my email this morning. It made me start posting again. I didn't expect that. Never win anything. I always though the contest was setup or bogus. Guess not.

I need a new weather station so probably go towards that.

Thanks for these! It helps believe it or not. I should bump our Foliage thread. It's that time of year. I'm starting to see some changes here and there too in Fairfield County. That's what you get with lack of 80s and 90s in August and more importantly DRY. Dew points have been in 40s and 50s past several days.

Also all those rainy and cloudy days we had helped this early change.

1:50pm and it's only in the 60s???? lol Crazy. Usually we have 1-2 day breaks, not multiple days like this.

Cloudy and Rain on our doorstep

You got Harvey which is a 'D"epression and the wanna be Tropical storm off the Eastern Seaboard National Hurricane Center says will eventually be a Cat 1 Hurricane for the fishes.

NWS forecast for Hartford next 7 days. Fri-Sat chilly again. Last time I was in the 80s was last week. Doesnt feel like August for sure.

So, Cambium, question for you. Curious in your educated opinion is it possible for CT to see the kind of rainfall generated by Harvey? I recognize they're calling the rain event a 1 in 1,000 years, but is there something unique about the Gulf compared to Atlantic hurricanes that caused these totals? Or is this event replicable, say in CT, and the 1,000 year phenomenon is solely the answer?

Makes you think for the need for flood insurance irrespective of flood zone...

Will keep this simple and non debateable.

This map should help.

Theres been Tropical storms that dumped 2-4 feet of water in the past. Sure doesnt happen often but a little education on history you'll find other "unprecedented" events.

To that note... because it doesn't happen often what are the odds the same exact spot would get hit. Rare. On that note how many rain gauges and weather sites did we have in the past to get data from? Let that soak in. Now its easier to find a spot with more rain.

Then think about the population being less pre 1970 or 1950 with less structures around and much less pavement.

U.S hadnt gotten hit with a major hurricane since...what..2005? So should we ignore 12 quiet yrs or a "down" trend in extreme weather just because of 1 storm?

Now...the reason.... Harvey was basically blocked from moving inland because of High Pressure in Western U.S and the Jet stream dipping in East. so when you get a tropical storm stalling you get copius amounts of water which was Harveys case.

Amelia wasnt even a Hurricane. Let that soak in. wonder what the headlines were then.
