Monday March 12, 2018 Storm Update

GFS glancing blow
German misses
Canadian glancing blow
Euro misses

Here's the Euro.. Well southeast of us. But Just a 200 mile shift west and guess what, we're in.. Not a big shift for 3 days out but even a 100 mile shift and we get a little something.

And here's the GFS. Much closer with it but not a huge precip shield.

Thanks Cam. There must be wide dispersion in totals across the state (putting aside the NW CT). I had 30+” from just the January 4 (13”) and March 7 (17”) storms. Probably approaching 50”.

Questions:
What elevation are?
How are you measuring? (every hour, 6hrs, ect)
Where are you measuring? (on deck, yard, street, ect)

Here's a look at snow totals for these 3 counties. I doubt you have as much as Colebrook does but I can see you having 40"+ if your elevation is higher than most reporting here in Fairfield or if its a spot where snow is blowing off a roof enhancing the totals.

Yes I see the snow showers outside. lol . Its thanks to one of my favorite atmospheric features.. Upper Level Low is over top of us.

They produce snow showers, flurries, squalls, rain showers when not cold enough, they keep surface cool, its cloudy, sunny, and produces cool looking clouds at times.

Last 4 hrs

They must have some funky ruler at norfolk or measuring in a drift. Other high elevations in nw ct right nearby not nearly as high as norfolk's reporting. I WISH there was someone else giving another report from norfolk so we could verify those reports.

If it doesn't snow A LOT again much that's pretty much near normal for most areas.

It's no wonder Norfolk is called the Icebox of CT. Their normal snowfall is 90 inches. That 78" doesn't look funky to me.

Check out what I remember I had...

Ignore the 53.1" for the year. If you add up the months it comes to 79 as the chart I posted before confirms.

I'd love to meet the guy measuring the snow up there. Wonder if he gets measuring fatigue. lolol

Top snowiest seasons in Norfolk, CT

Their normal comes from that reporting station that's reporting 78 inches so saying their normal is 90 is irrelevant since I'm questioning the measurements from that reporting station. "Icebox" of CT is meaningless as far as snowfall data goes. It's just a saying. Pittsfield averages around mid 60's if I remember correctly. Nowhere near 90 and it's about the same elevation almost to vermont. Norfolk reporting is highly suspect imho

Your own link.
Here's pittsfield
https://wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?ma6414

73 inch average. It's north of the mass pike and over 1000 feet.

https://wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?ct1715
Cream hill, ct a few miles from norfolk 70 inches

https://wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?ma9371
West otis ma, 64 inch average. NORTH of norfolk and HIGH elevation

When I figure out how much snow an area gets I like to look at a couple of stations, not just one. It takes human error/bad measuring out of the equation. Norfolk's reports don't line up at all with NW CT. I'd say NW CT at over 1000 feet gets around 70 inches a year average. Just my 2 cents. That's a TON of snow btw for CT. STill fitting to call it the icebox
