Pepe's, Sally's, Modern, and BAR are the most well known, so figure on hitting them. Ernie's is less well known, but worth a trip. I've heard good things about Abate's, but have never been. Zuppardi's in West Haven is close by and worth checking out.

Abate's, Giovanni's, Mike & Maria's in Foxon, Luigi's in North Haven, Tolli's in East Haven.

Pepe
Sally’s
BAR
Modern
Ernie’s
Da Legna (new, but amazing)

Abate is NOT at all worth it. Totally average and not New Haven style. I find Zuppardi’s in West Haven overrated, but worth trying.

Roseland in Derby and Papa’s in Milford are noteworthy enough to try too. Also, very different but Bufalina in Guilford is excellent.

Nice way to gain 5 pounds.

Yeah
Night1 - Pepes
Night2 - Sallys - just up the street from Pepes, may come out a little overdone and burnt, great waiter
Night3 - Roseland up in Derby - think old depressed mining town, great pie though and greasy as hell
Night4 - Buffalina - in beautiful quintessential New Englandy town setting
Head home and go jogging up in those hills to burn off calories

If you're there for 4-5 days, I would definitely swing by the Hartford area and visit one of the "holy trinity" of Harry's, Harry's BC, or Luna in West Hartford. We moved to a neighboring state earlier this year, and sorely miss that pizza already. And yes, based on my limited sampling I would rate those 3 higher than Pepe's (in Elmwood).

You must try Modern. For all the fame and hype of Pepe's, Modern won the New Haven Adovcate Reader's Poll for best pizza year after year before the publication went under a few years back. The locals know what's up. I lived in NH for nearly a decade and Modern was always my go-to. Went to Pepe's once or twice a year to mix things up.

I would say Modern, Pepe's and BAR are the three must-try spots. I'd go with plain cheese at Modern (I'm a pizza purist, what can I say?), the white clam at Pepe's and the mashed potato at BAR.

Harry's is pretty good, but have never been a fan of Luna's, although I appear to be in the minority as most people I know get excited for it. The best pizza in Hartford is at First and Last on Maple St. IMO, although I still think its a step below the New Haven shops.

Will also second Dayton St., but I've only had take out there.

No Sally's? Sacrilege.

It's my favorite of all time, but the service, line, and cooking is SLOW so it winds up being a very long experience.
