I just got home from Jalapeno Heaven in Branford. Always delicious, and they make their own sangria. It's the "New Haven area" part of your question but not sure how far from the other side you're willing to travel.

I went to Jalapeño Heaven twice when I lived in Branford. The first time, it was awful. I decided to give it a second shot and it was worse. I do not suggest the OP go there.

OP, check out Mezcal in New Haven. It’s authentic and pretty good. Also check out Geronimo (more TexMex style - awesome margaritas), although the wait on a Saturday could be long.

Rivas meat market in wallingford is hands down the best I taste. Every time I go back to ct that's one of the first places I go. It was one other place that was pretty good in fair haven but can't remember the name right now
