I'll be going to Uconn Law in hartford and don't know anything about the area or where to live. I'm looking for a town that isn't too expensive as I'm still a student but that is still safe because I'm a single mom. I have a toddler daughter so i need a town that has good day cares/pre schools During my education there she will be starting elementary school so its important that the town have a decent public school system (I've heard bad things about hartford). I was told that I should consider the town of west hartford. What can anyone tell me about it. How about newington? While the closer the better, I would be willing to commute to school at least 30 mins driving. Any other towns that don't have horrible reps or ridiculously high costs?

West Hartford is one of the Hartford areas best towns- a sort of urban sophistication package that is mostly suburban. The town offers a fine center, innovative urban renewal as in Blue Back Square, leafy established neighborhoods and excellent schools. There are many rentals available, that are likely to be on the expensive side.

You mentioned Newington- which is a good town with good schools. Also consider Wethersfield and Rocky Hill to the south of Hartford not very far. If at the Law School, I would imagine for convenience you would want to stay west of the river.

East of the river, however South Windsor, Manchester and Vernon might be of interest to you.

Many law school students live in Hartford and West Hartford. The West End of Hartford is fine, but if you're concerned about the schools, you probably wouldn't want to live there. West Hartford is pretty expensive, but it's a great area to raise children. It's also very convenient. You'll likely have a few hours between classes. Living close by gives you an opportunity to go home or run errands before your next class begins.

If you prefer to live further away, I don't think it matters whether you choose to live east or west of the river. I currently live east of the river and commute into Hartford. The traffic usually isn't too bad.

If I obtain a job at UCONN Law School, and I have no car, where would it be good to live? I am a single 50 year old woman with no children. I am used to having to walk for every little thing. I don't bike but I guess I could try it if I had to. I have lived in 3 big cities since the early eighties so I am used to walking & taking public transportation. I have lived with an awareness of crime since the first big city, & don't overdo chances on where to live & go, but I am also more used to stuff that goes with big cities. I would need to get to work & back, & also be able to get everything I need in some way; food, doctor visits, clothes, etc. I could also forget about the job posting. I know CT is not famous for public transportation, but sometimes there are oases. I am far from rich & would be renting. Thanks!

The UConn Law School is located in the West End of Hartford. This is a fairlyu safe somewhat urban area with bus lines running down Famrington Avenue. If you find a place near Famrington Avenue you will have mass transit access to most of your needs. Neighboring West Hartford has a great downtown with all kinds of stores and restaurants. Check craigslist.com for places in the West End or West Hartford. Jay
