We'll likely go to MA or NY once or twice a month most months and are thinking it would be convenient to have a toll tag. Will other states allow me as a CT resident to buy one? And if so, which state is the best to get? It looks like MA doesn't charge a monthly service fee so that may be the best, but just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something. Thanks for any help.

You can get any pass you want. You can even get multiple if you want, and keep one in a shielded mount/box. I have NY since there's a pretty big discount on NY tolls, and those are the ones I use a vast majority of the time.

Go with Massachusetts. They do not charge Connecticut residents for EZ passes. I believe New York does. I got mine there based on a recommendation I received on this forum and did not have to pay for the transponder. Just had to set up an account and tie it to a charge card. They mailed me the transponders. Jay

Years ago I found NJ was charging a $1/month fee? So I never set one up.

Do they all hit you for $25 right away? I went to NY last fall and should've set one up before that.

NY used to have a a dollar a month fee. Not sure if they still do looking online it seems to depend on which discount plan your on NY has several.

If you don't use it alot MA offers no fees and up to 4 transponders free (not even a deposit other states charger 10-20 each) MA also only requires $20 prepayment to the toll account. Since most of the tolls I hit are MA NH and ME that's what I have the 2-3 trips a year in NY don't matter much.

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like we'll get a MA pass as that's where a majority of our out of state trips will be. Thanks for the help!

Looks like the OP's issue is resolved but for the record, neither MA nor NY charges a fee. I have transponders from both for several years now.

Hah, good timing as I just dealt with this. First off, avoid NJ as they charge $ 1 fee mothly and there minimum auto replenishment is $50. Ridiculous. It also took two months to get money they owed me when I closed account. Service is arrogant and rude. I opted for NY but they did charge $1 fee. Also make sure you choose email statements. They took $6 because I did not opt out of mail statements. Jerks. You can also choose PA ezpass with no fee but no discount either.

I have NJ since being in NY over decade ago. Just never changed it. $1 no big deal fee and $25 auto replenish when drops below $20. Never had a problem so why change

Mostly use it for New Rochelle I95 tolls, beacon bridge, Harriman, and TappanZee (is it still called that? Lol). Travelled to Buffalo and Vermont and it worked at all tolls involved
