There is an industrial waste facility planned for Clinton.
One article:
https://www.zip06.com/news/20180130/...rns-to-clinton

I don't have all the details but there's a fb page set up for it that I'm following.

This is bad stuff. Makes me sad.

Whose town 'deserves' the waste then?

Bahaha! A reason I hesitated moving to Clinton.

This is a commercial, moneymaking venture. It's not a municipal "dump" per se. It threatens the ecology of our water run off and there's at least one endangered species that will be affected.

I gather there's a similar place in Willimantic and a fire recently occurred which produces hazardous, toxic smoke that could cause evacuation.

Properly managed, a "dump" can be a great economic boon and I'm very open minded considering the success stories around the country (Mt. Trashmore in Va Beach being one of them). This seems to NOT be that kind of place.

It seems to be heavily opposed in Clinton. I didn't see a thread on it and wondered if anyone was following it.

This popped up in my head: Isn't the idea of a recycling facility to prevent materials from being trashed, dumped, and landfilled? Wouldn't this facility be a good thing for wildlife preservation? Or maybe folks don't want a physical building there to begin with, which means it doesn't necessarily matter what is being proposed.

Isn't the property zoned for industrial use? Isn't what is proposed considered industry? I don't know enough about the project or proposal to comment further. Jay

I now a little about this because my relatives own the "heavy industrial" dump yard in Stamford on Canal Street and my other relatives own the recycling plant in Stamford. Something like this does not belong in a small town like Clinton with a population of 3,368.

Light industry

"Light industry facilities typically have less environmental impact than those associated with heavy industry"

vs

Heavy industry

Thank you so much for your input. This could very well be disastrous for Clinton.

Instead of ridiculous blanket comments like that... maybe look at the issue at hand here... it's not just your typical "dump".

I was under the impression our waste turns into energy. Maybe thats only a few facilities?

Anyway, for nearby residents and businesses, some of the major risks of landfills include groundwater contamination and reduced air quality. Those can be closely monitored and controlled.

With population continuing to increase you have to keep "garbage" in mind. It will never stop so we will need more areas to collect it. The more we keep building the less room we'll have for garbage.
