My husband and I were set on moving to Brookfield. However, we have recently learned that the town is allowing a large natural gas compressor to be built - basically IN a residential family neighborhood (off High Meadow Road), and very close to the Jr. High School. I have found very little information on this and it seems to be the "elephant in the room" for this town.

I am left wondering how such a nice, family-oriented town could have allowed this to pass, and why there doesn't seem to be more outrage or more press on the issue. It seems that this could have some serious "Erin Brochovich"-like repercussions down the line.

The Brookfield Journal - More well testing, safeguards sought

"There has been a great deal of concern about its contaminating the ground water," IWC Chairman Lawrence Miller has said of his panel's vote last November to reject the application by Iroquois.

"Iroquois has indicated that it will store pipeline [chemicals] at a rate of 50 gallons a year, which is quite a lot," Mr. Miller added.

I should also mention that Brookfield isn't exactly the cheapest town in CT to live in (housing is still priced fairly high even in the neighborhoods nearest to the proposed site) and seems to pride itself on it's schools and safe/crime-free neighborhoods. This is crazy to me because as far as I am concerned, putting people's health and lives in danger environmentally IS a crime. Why would we pay to live in a town like that?

I'm not familiar with the situation in Brookfield, but I know Oxford is doing the exact same thing only in an industrial park far away from residential neighborhoods. I'm sure both towns see $$$$, but it sounds like Oxford was a little smarter in approving this. If you're unsure about this issue, I suggest you contact the town hall and ask about it. It is public information.

It has to go someplace. Another example is the Norwalk-Middletown corridor with the upgrade to the high-tension wires.

It has to go someplace, and the tax money the town will receive from it will help lessen the impact of funding the public services to the residents. If you can any spefific concerns on the plant and where exactly on the land it will go, go to the town hall.

"It has to go someplace." Yeah, ok.

I guess that I would go to town hall if I hadn't already decided AGAINST living in a town that puts a gas compressor in residential backyards and down the block from a school.

I don't need to go to town hall to know out that the citizens of this town didn't have a say in this getting passed, and I don't need to hear self-serving town officials and realtors giving me the spin on this.

It is clear to me that this was a decision made by a few greedy town officials who likely don't have kids that age, and who clearly don't live in the neighborhoods surrounding the proposed site.

People who are considering moving to Brookfield ought to know that this is happening. Sure it's "public" info, but most people would have to dig to find it. I find it especially interesting (though not surprising) that this was passed in the Fall of 07 and yet has not once been brought up on this message board.

Brookfield just lost itself some potential "customers."

There is a video on one of the hearing on Youtube if you search 'brookfield gas compressor.' The town had the 3 gas pipelines forced in there through eminent domain over 20 years ago. I do tell people looking in the immeadiate area of the gas compressor that it is going in and you would have to decide if you would feel comfortable living there.
