I wouldn't buy in Waterbury due to property taxes and car insurance. If you are looking for rent for $1200 or less for a 1 bdrm Waterbury is your best bet.

Now if you want can expand further out of the City. Cheshire, Bristol, Watertown, Southington, Naugatuck, Thomaston, Middlebury/Woodbury/Southbury have nice rents for a little more.

I rent in Waterbury. It's centrally located between Hartford, Danbury, Middletown, New Haven, Torrington, and Bridgeport.

I highly recommend Seymour. Waterbury is a short ride up Rt 8 north . Most traffic during rush hour will be in the opposite direction morning & night so your commute should be fairly easy. I’ve been in Seymour 13 years, and can tell you once people get here they they stay. Welcome to CT !

I grew up 15 minutes from Waterbury in the small town of Southbury. Some areas are a little pricey but you can definitely find some houses with your budget. Southbury is convenient for food and shopping (being near Waterbury and Danbury) and is a very safe town. I’d definitely look there. Other options are Naugatuck, Watertown, and Wolcott though.
