Will be re-locating from Florida to Berlin, CT for a new job and I’m very excited. Need information on apartments to rent in the surrounding towns/cities with no to low crime rate. I need at least 2 bedrooms and a mall/Walmart 😃. Any suggestions, trying to not have to drive no further than 30 minutes one way.

Newington has lots of rentals. The Berlin Turnpike has everything you need it has every box store imaginable.

Middletown is a nice option, and inexpensive.

You don’t really have to worry about any of these towns being unsafe.

What is your budget and are schools important? There are many towns near Berlin that are safe. Keep in mind though that there is no place that is completely crime free but there are many low crime areas.

I would first recommend Rocky Hill. It is a very nice town with many rentals and good schools. There is plenty of good shopping in town or nearby. That said Rocky Hill is pricier than other towns in the area.

As Stylo mentioned Middletown would be another good option. The West Lake section has many nice apartments and is a bit less expensive. The schools in Middletown are not considered to be as good as Rocky Hill so I would not recommend it if you want good schools.

RunD1987’s suggestion of Newington is also very good. It is a nice town with good schools and lots of shopping. Berlin is also a good option but there are not a lot of rentals there. Good luck and welcome to Connecticut. Jay

If you have no children, I would suggest Middletown. A neat little city with lots of funky charm and their downtown area is improving all the time. Not long ago, Main Street had quite a few empty storefronts and it was not a very desirable area (though never dangerous). This would be a good place to settle since there's lots to do and you'd have an easier time meeting people than in a more suburban setting.

If your search involves schools, however, I would suggest elsewhere. Middletown's schools don't have the same degree of social ills that you see in larger cities, and they've definitely improved over the years (like the city itself has), but they're still not the best. If you have children, Newington and neighboring Rocky Hill (both north of Berlin) have plenty of rentals and the schools are good (and IMO better than Berlin which is facing potential school closings due to budget issues).

Definitely explore the area and some of the towns to get a feel for what you like, if you have the chance, and once you determine what your budget is, I would just close in on a few towns to narrow your search.

Good luck!

I would suggest Newington over Rocky Hill and Middletown. Do you have a family? What is your age range? Either way, Newington has better rentals than Rocky Hill and Middletown is just gross.

C'mon now. Middletown isn't gross. It's an affordable area, but safe and improving.

I agree. It sounds like SunFlower33 does not really know Middletown at all. West Lake/Westfield is as nice as Rocky Hill or Newington. Lots of very nice luxury apartment complexes. Downtown Middletown is full of great restaurants. Probably one of the best selections in the state. Middletown is home to Wesleyan University, one of the most respected colleges in the country. What is "gross" about that? Jay
