Hi, today I was at a "welcome" ceremony with about 100 other newly hired Norwalk teachers (please, no comments about schools in this thread, my thread is about the beach).

They mentioned some "perks" and one they mentioned is if you show your "city employee ID" at the gate for Calf Pasture, they will let you in to go to the restaurant (noting that only 1 or 2 schools are close enough to Calf Pasture to actually do this during lunch), but said they would let you do this on their own time as well.

So someone asked if you are a city employee but a non-resident of Norwalk, do you and your family get resident status for going to this beach (i.e. it's free). They weren't sure. For curiousity I checked on their website and it appears the answer is "no" but it wasn't clear as in it didn't say anything about that postively nor negatively.

While I am not saying it is the greatest beach in the world (though it doesn't look bad either for a Sound beach), I was still curious if anyone knew whether that "perk" is true or not (not about the restaurant but about the beach itself) and if there are limits (i.e. myself and a couple of others in this group don't live in CT so I don't know if you have to be a city employee AND a CT resident, though if this job goes well I might move closer next year). Thanks!

You should ask HR this question. They would know what benefits employees get. If I had to guess, I would say no. I never heard of any town offering resident benefits to employees but again ask. Jay

You have to ask the town clerk (send an email) or the folks at the entrance checking for passes. Last I checked you have to have a pass to get in and the only way to get a pass is to be an actual resident, not employee.

And since this thread is about the beach... it is awesome beach .. was there the other day.

A friend of mine is a teacher in Norwalk and to my knowledge, they don’t get this perk. I know other towns, like Westport and Darien, give local first responders (police/fire) beach access. Not sure about teachers in those towns, though.

Thank you Same guy I've been dating for years, too! Very excited.

Anyhow--OP, def go and see if you can walk on. Also, I believe you only need the beach pass for between memorial and labor day (I had a car pass, but often went for a run down there, so I walked on a lot.) Sunset Grille is always free parking, just actually go to the restaurant.

I had figured this thread ran it's course, but yes, I figured they only really charge/check for residency between memorial and labor day and if you just wanted to enjoy the park and the view you go then.....even some shorefront parks and beaches in Greenwich are like that (though the very scenic Tod's Point is only completely "free" between November and March, with lesser fees and restrictions in April, most of May and most of Sept. and Oct. than in the summer).

And congratulations on your upcoming wedding and a gorgeous spot to have one!
