Overall Bridgeport's North End is one of the safest parts of the city. The Blackham school area is very safe but much of the area several blocks to the south of the school (St. Vincent's Hospital area) has multi-family houses, mostly two and three families. Many are owner occupied but a few are not so there may be some problems with the tenants there. Generally note that the further north you go the safer the area is. It really is nice. Jay

I live in Trumbull and know some about the north end of Bridgeport as I go to Main Street, Madison Ave. and the Park Ave. areas in the north end. The only area in the northern part of Bridgeport you should watch out for IMO is the area around the Trumbull Gardens.

Ganim returns to Trumbull Gardens, a crime hot spot.

I think the North End is pretty nice. Generally, the further north and west, the better. You want to be north of about Westfield Avenue, and between Park and Madison, or maybe a little east of Madison. The further north you go, the more east you can go, generally. Further south, you need to be pretty far west.

I think the area between Madison and Main Street is also fine and pretty much everything from Westfield down to Capital Avenue is also safe. Even the section from Capital down to North Avenue is also relatively safe. It is more dense and has sections with more multi family housing which creates more issues but overall it is safe. Jay

I guess, but on Capitol Avenue, the deterioration of the housing stock is visible block by block as you head east. I wouldn't go much past Park Avenue as far south as Capitol Avenue. Madison Avenue that far south is pretty rundown.

In any case, south of Westfield Avenue, I consider it Brooklawn rather than the North End. I think of the North End as beginning around Westfield Avenue.

We had friends that lived south of Westfield and they considered themselves living in the North End. Some of that area is considered to be Brooklawn but Central High School on Lincoln Boulevard is considered to be the North End. Kind of strange.

It is true some of the streets around Capital Avenue between Madison and Main are rundown looking which is why I mention the multi family housing. But many of the streets south of Capital and west of Lincoln Boulevard are very nice. One thing that worries me about that area though is that a major retail institution there, Sorrento's Market was recently destroyed by fire. Rather than rebuild their iconic store at the corner of Main Street and Capital Avenue, they decided to move to Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield. Their new store is slated to open in a month or so. Good for Fairfield. Bad for Bridgeport IMHO. Jay

Though it was back from 2009-11, I worked at Central High for a couple of years. While a rough school by most places standards, for Bridgeport it was a pretty good place, partially because if you lived in the relatively nice North End, you went to this HS, and partially because they had a "magnet" program for the smart kids in which you had a floor all to yourselves (I don't know if that still is the case there).
