Anyone who doesn't earn $22.52 an hour can't afford to rent a two-bedroom apartment in the region, according to a report released today. According to an annual report by the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, which partnered with the Connecticut Housing Coalition, the fair-market rent in neighboring Bridgeport is $1,171 monthly for a two-bedroom apartment.
In order to be considered "affordable," a household should not spend more than 30 percent of total income on housing, according to the report.
Using that measure, a Bridgeport renter needs annual income of $46,840 to afford a typical two-bedroom apartment here.
Renters in parts of the county closer to New York face even tougher numbers.
According to the report, the Stamford-Norwalk metropolitan area is the "most expensive rental market in the entire country - surpassing cities such as Honolulu, San Francisco, New York and Boston - with a housing wage of $31.58 an hour."
Of all the states, Connecticut is the seventh least affordable, and the rural areas are the fifth least affordable nationally.
On average, according to the report, renters in Connecticut earn $16.53 an hour, which means - using the 30 percent threshold - they can afford a rent of $860 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. Statewide, the typical rent for a two bedroom is $1,098.
