So this week is tax free week, which I think has been watered down to only clothing under $100, thanks Dannel. Retail stores are pretty much done with back to school sales as they have them at the end of July and first week of August.

So, did the government miss the ball for years and don't sync tax free week with the back to school sales? or do they do this on purpose, to say "we have a tax free week" after everybody has spent their money on back to school at 15-30% off and laugh at the 6.35% saving this week?

From what I see, stores are in sync with the state for tax free week. Sure stores start their back to school sales at the end of July but that does not mean they are done after one or two weeks. These days stores have clothing sales all the time so we never pay full price on clothing. It’s just the way it works. Jay

Why do you think it's the state that schedules its tax-free week around the sales of retail stores? It's much more likely the stores have their sales (or alter prices) around the tax-free week.

I can only speak for myself when I say this, but I've actually had a good stroke of luck when clothes shopping during tax-free week. I'm sure there are some retailers who do not offer sales to accommodate buyers during this week, but I've found many who do, and considering this is the only time of the year I will now buy clothing in this state, I'm taking full advantage of it.

Now if you'll excuse me,...

I don’t really see the point in complaining about tax free week. I’ve never taken advantage of it, personally, but it’s better than not having a tax free week.

They actually considered doing away with it earlier this year, from what I remember reading in the Courant. I'm so glad they didn't!

How about doing away with the sales tax on clothing and footwear under $50 like it used to be?

I wish they would! That isn't an unreasonable thing, and the state would still be able to generate tax revenue, just not for anything at or below $50 (IMO $50 or even $100 should be the cap.)

It was a shock to move back to CT and now we have to pay sales tax on clothing. Back in MA there wasn't a sales tax on clothes unless it was some insanely high priced item. Food and clothing are essential. Everything is more expensive in CT. We pay higher car insurance premiums than the Boston area. CT has the highest electric rates in the entire country. Food itself is more expensive here.

dh asked the grocery stores if they could order a particular brand for him and the only one that did was Stop and Shop. When he went to buy it, the price was three times higher than back in MA. Of course, that's Stop and Shop where the prices are sky high anyway, but why such taxes and high prices? It wouldn't be such a bad place to live otherwise. /rant
