I'll try to answer it. The entire country didnt get snow. The areas that got snow had instability from a surface low. We just had a front so behind the front (in the cold) it was too dry so no snow for us. The rest of country was in the 60s as well before the cold came in. It came from Siberia. A long trip, took a week to get here.

Hope that helps.

I try not to get too technical in here but look at the 27,000' level to understand a weather pattern.

Here's the current upper level heights at that level. Center of the Vortex is now over NY state. LARGE vortex and inside it is the coldest airmass we seen in decades for December. Trough (jet stream) dug far south

Feels like this. Don't forget, the front just crossed over CT. It had crossed over Ohio Valley yesterday. Tomorrow is our crazy day

This is a really interesting meteorological event many will never forget!

Maybe the cold front is coming through Hartford County now. Outside it's REALLY cold and finally it is windy. The wind is noisy, like a rushing noise. Now I'm getting scared of a power failure.

Good explanation!

CT just missed getting some snow.....Philly and NJ did get a little snow in the end but as the front moved north and east it kept drying up more so NYC and Westchester got a very brief snow that didn't accumulate and so for the most part in CT and points east it was already too dry along the front to really get snow (though I heard it did snow a little in the Danbury area).

Already down to 10 degrees even in Central Park, this is really impressive and the coldest in December (and Christmas Eve/Day) in quite a long time.....

By the way, how's your sister faring with the snow there? My sister (she lives a lot closer to Buffalo though) lost lights and heat for 10 hours today but amazingly the crews were out there in the blinding blizzard restoring power (Eversource could learn from them, right? ).....she's lived up there for 31 years now and this still terrified her a bit but she is truly amazed at the power crews being out there in this. My daughter who goes to college up there has been back for Christmas/winter break since last week so it didn't affect her

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
659 AM EST Sat Dec 24 2022

Cold, dry and windy conditions will continue. Highs today look low
enough to break or tie some record low max temperatures (see climate
section below). Highs will be in the upper teens for most, with some
low 20s near the coast and across Long Island. Given winds 20-25 mph
with gusts up to 30-35 mph, max wind chills will be in the low
single digits to a few below 0. This morning, wind chills across the
Lower Hudson Valley and interior NJ will be -15 to -20, so a Wind
Chill Advisory remains in place until 10AM.

Ocean and sound effect snow continues across the east end of Long
Island and far eastern CT today. The heaviest bands right now are
south of Long Island and across the Cape and Islands in
Massachusetts. A much lighter band is currently over the Twin Forks
and just flurries are being observed.
Not expecting any of the
heavier bands to affect our land areas, but flurries to light snow
showers are possible through early tonight.
