When I lived in the Albany, NY area for a few years in the late 80s I experienced "thundersnow" once or twice.....since that's a thing what you say is certainly far from impossible too, just rare....

Lots was going on but in short when there is Thunder there is instability in the atmosphere. Heres why

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
928 PM EST Thu Jan 19 2023

.SYNOPSIS...
A nearly stationary front remains south of the area overnight as
low pressure deepens on the front and tracks south of Long
Island.

With weak elevated CAPE and instability, along with lift from
deepening low pressure along the Delmarva, isolated
thunderstorms have developed across southern and central New
Jersey and were tracking quickly north/northeast.

secondary
surface low begins to develop offshore over the northern mid-
Atlantic states and then treks east of Long Island tonight. So
capped POPs at likely for these areas. Otherwise, no major
changes needed to the forecast.

A cutoff low will continue moving across the Great Lakes region
this evening. The upper low then moves over the northeast early
Friday as it mainly becomes an open wave. Parent low pressure
will move well to our northwest this evening as a secondary low
develops along a warm front just south of Long Island.

The warm
front may try to reach the south coast of Long Island this
evening as the secondary moves along it. The secondary low then
deepens and becomes the primary low as it moves off the New
England coast late tonight and early Friday morning.

Thanks for the explanation. Noted because thunder and lightning in winter actually happens in some places ("thundersnow") and is very very unlikely to be a function of climate change.

There is a thread in the weather forum called "Coldest Thunderstorm" pretty interesting to see others from different areas

And to constantly mention climate change or global warming with weather events is getting a bit ________
I wish we can just discuss weather and climate without needing to bring that up

What ashame… Look at this next storm track!

The storm is over Oklahoma right now, its going towards Kentucky tomorrow while a storm in the Gulf comes up the coast. The Tennessee Valley Storm will merge with it off the Virginia coast and stay too close to the coast for it to be snow for CT. another rain storm!

Might start as snow in some places

No Cold High Pressure to the north.

WASTED STORMS! We got spoiled in the 2010s
