I also noticed both NYC and BDR are ahead of Boston in snow totals, wonder how often that has happened too?

Actually they are even (very slightly) ahead of Portland, ME too, but I have a feeling that won't stay the rest of the season.....
Again...I will submit that Boston (Logan) snow totals can be misleading. There were a couple of events this past winter with significant snowfall amounts just a few miles inland, near the 128/95 belt, but changeover to rain at the airport.

But that happens in NYC too, at least compared to just north and west of it. As well as BDR vs BDL. The "normals" are 26" of snow per winter for Central Park and 42" for Logan Airport so I assume while its far from impossible that that are years NYC "beat" Boston in snowfall, that they are not common.

I think the averages for BDR vs. BDL are 27" vs. 45".

Cam, I feel like I remember you saying the averages for "normal" are redone every 10 years? If so, did that happen yet? And won't our normal then increase? It feels like the past 10 years have been exceptionally snowy.

We can always just check since 1948 for BDL and compare. Probably not many times. Was an interesting winter. Even in ND south got more than north. Lol

Yes. New normal is now 1991-2020.
To be released in May. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/Upcom...limate-Normals

I have to do comparisons soon.

Exactly. More will always fall outside the climo airport sites and the burbs will have a slightly higher snowfall normal. I wish White Plains HPN measured snow.

15% relative humidity in Hartford!

66 F degrees
Dewpoint 18 F!

I didn’t know this was even possible on the East Coast but see it is !!!!! This may be tonight the lowest overnight relative humidity in years for New England in any month.

Wow! I guess I forgot they go back 30 years. Hopefully that evens out the norm a bit. Can't wait to see your post on that - thanks Cam

Interesting side note is that (but it's not coming until later this year), NWS is going to have 2 sets of normals, a 30 year one and a 15 year one (2006-2020).

Working on it. Not sure exactly the way they calculate it. For example. I just noticed:

For January...

Using the "Daily" Mean Max Temp from 1991-2020 = 38.1°
Using the "Monthly" Mean Max Temp from 1991-2020 = 39.5°

So I have to do a little homework when I have more time.

Where are you getting the preliminary 1991-2020 numbers?
