Are you going to be working at Yale? When I moved there for a position at the College, they gave me the name of a relocation service/agent who would provide rental and real estate services at no cost. Not sure if they still offer this but, if you’ll be working for Yale, you could ask.
I'd be relocating as a graduate student. My husband is a professor, but not at Yale.
You will generally find more rentals in Branford and Milford. They are both popular spots for students/Yale workers looking for coastal rentals. The housing stock is more varied than Guilford/Madison. If you see a rental you like in Guilford/Madison, you'll have to move quickly as they're more rare.

We rented in that price range in Guilford fairly recently (and then decided to buy in the same town). It should be feasible, though it is true that there is low stock and things move quickly. Guilford is an awesome town for families with young kids-we have only been here for a few years but I really love it.
I think it is much wiser to rent than to buy if you don't have a long time horizon-don't let someone push you into buying unless you are sure!
