Hi all, I am hoping you can help our family! Our first son was born via emergency c section and there were several complications and the pregnancy was high risk.

We are in the Woodbury area and trying to decide which hospital to pick for the next birth where we will opt for a c section. Danbury is only about 25 minutes away but Yale is much better from what I read but about 45 minutes away.

Please advise we recently moved here from a big city so any information is appreciated!

Live in the same general area. Start with Danbury, they will refer to Yale if the condition is outside of their expertise. Yale is wonderful but twice as far away, so in a true emergency you would deliver at Danbury anyway.

Had a great experience at Danbury with my kids. More than half the women I know in the area delivered there too. Several acquaintances had emergency/crash c sections there with great outcomes. Delivering at Yale is not unheard of but not super common up here.

Yale is one of the top twenty hospitals in the country. It is about 25 miles from Woodbury. But because there are no dir3ct highway, it’s about a 45 minute drive. Danbury is a nice small regional hospital. It’s about 22 miles from Woodbury but because I-84 goes almost directly between them, the drive is about 30 minutes. In pregnancy, time can be of significance so I’d go with the closest hospital which I believe is in Waterbury which is about 11 miles or 20 minutes away. Jay

The Waterbury hospitals have fallen out of favor in that area for labor/delivery services. Danbury is a fairly common choice. Others go to Griffin Hospital in Derby, Charlotte Hungerford in Torrington, along with Yale or Norwalk Hospital.

OP here - we looked into Waterbury and were not impressed with statistics and the doctors didn’t have the best reviews. I guess for a scheduled c section I wonder if it’s fine that Yale is farther but I do like the comfort of closer danbury. More anecdotes and what folks chose are welcome, we’re so anxious about this.

It sounds like your prior experience was very traumatizing. Danbury is great at delivering a baby safely and taking care of pregnancy complications. The benefit of going to Yale is having access to the specialists who can treat unusual pediatric complications. I think if you are worried about something like a placental abruption you will feel more comfortable in the long run being seen close to home. But if your concerns are related to a structural abnormality or other rare condition, go to Yale.
