Well here is one route using I-81, and avoiding NYC, Philly and Wash DC

https://goo.gl/maps/KmNtzk8yJhP7cQFR6

It's about 5 hours and 300 miles longer than the shortest I-95 route

I-75 to Atlanta, then I-85 to Charlotte and then finally I-77 to it's intersection with 81 in SW VA. It's probably 4 hours of extra driving.

Try mapping a trip on Google maps from home to Atlanta or Charlotte, and then from there to Newington. That should show the exact route you would need to take to get to 81.

No Need to be avoiding I-95 all the way. Currently traffic has been down a bit due to Covid-19. I would honestly go ahead and take I-4 E to I-95 N all the way to South Carolina, and then get on I-26 W to I-77 N to I-81 N. Take I-81 all the way to Harrisburg, and get on I-78 E, and then take I-287 N, over the Tappan Zee Bridge. Then get on the Merritt Pkwy through Fairfield County, and stay on it until it ends at I-91. Then take I-91 N to Newington.

I did the reverse drive in college during spring break. We drove from New Haven to Orlando. Did I-95 basically the whole way. We did the New Haven to North Carolina part in 8 hours from 11pm to 7am. Just to avoid most of the traffic in the major cities.

How many hours per day is the OP willing to drive? Orlando to DC is 12 hours. Personally, that’s my limit. I’d do I-95 to the Jersey Turnpike letting Waze direct me past DC and NYC. With COVID-19, it’s not the usual DC, Philly, and NYC traffic. If the OP is willing to do it in one shot, leave at 6am, plan a break before DC, and finish the drive at night with minimal traffic.

How does the OP plan to deal with the quarantine order? I don’t think I’d want to show up anywhere in the Northeast with Florida plates unless I had a very recent test result report in my pocket. I imagine Florida has a big test access and delay problem at the moment.

77 through Charlotte area wasn't that great-I'd probably just stay on 95 and take 270 just outside of Northern VA up to the Rt-15 to I-81/I-83 near Harrisburg to I-78, to 287 to 684 to I-84

I take this all the time when I drive from FL to CT. It adds about 100 miles to the I-95 trip but the drive through the Shenandoah Valley is well worth it. Plenty of good restaurants and motels along the way.
