I'm in the job market and doing some research on what area businesses have the best reputations among the people who work there? I'm mostly interested in places that have a positive company culture and offer at least a few perks beyond a regular paycheck and basic benefits. I have a background in inventory/supply chain, with previous experience in printing/publishing. Thanks in advance.

I'd check out Indeed and Linked-In, Glassdoor too maybe.

Oh yes, I'm on those sites all the time. However, they aren't always super-helpful in telling you whether a company is a really good employer or not. Sometimes there are reviews, but 3-4 reviews for a company with 1000 employees doesn't say much. I've also Googled recent surveys on best places to work, but word of mouth is always most effective.

I'd say that Stamford and New Haven are both major cities with a lot of job opportunities and have great companies. Really what you are asking for will really depend on the exact job you get and your employer, but I can say that those two cities are hubs for a number of companies local to CT, and you'd have a good chance there. Especially with Printing and Publishing. As someone who works partly in IT, I can say that Stamford and New Haven are both great in tech areas generally.

City Data's CT Hall of Heroes here can tell you all you need to know about CT river beds, streams, museums, dining options, the best towns. They'll erect statues of these guys one day but they probably won't know the ins and outs of working at Acme Co. in Shelton or ABC Corp in Milford.

Best of luck

I have to echo the use of Glassdoor and just asking local friends and family for advice. Also, in the COVID (and post-COVID) era, partial and full telework have become even more popular so I'd recommend expanding your search beyond the greater New Haven/Upper Fairfield County area.

* Diageo (mainly NYC with a smaller Stamford office) is a major alcohol distributor and they're supposedly to be a fun, good company to work for. Younger population. Expect longer hours.

* Unilever (they have a ton of brands you'd be familiar with like Dove) has presence in Shelton. I've always heard they have a respectable culture, though I recall reading in the news about continued staffing instability (layoffs).

* If you're into the software side, SAP and Oracle have offices (though likely small satellite ones) in lower Connecticut.

Diageo recently moved from a great office and location in Norwalk, CT to lower Manhattan (OOOOPPS!! - bad timing fellas) much to the chagrin of the majority of workforce in order to "Be like GE" (how'd that work out) and in the hopes that the longer commute would lead to voluntary staff exits in turn avoiding severance payouts. Bush league stuff.

I know some talented people that decided not to go. Dumb move IMO.
