We don't put our politics out there at all. But quite a lot of the area act out hatefully toward people who are different and apparently the way we live our lives and interact with people is different. We go on family walks and wave and say hello. About 10% of the time, we get a smile and wave in return. The rest of the time we are ignored or given dirty looks or spoken to rudely. We ride bikes, have kayak racks, wear concert tshirts (instead of fluorescent shirts or Buckeye gear), put National Parks stickers on our car. We don't drive big trucks or sit on our front stoops in pajama pants, barefoot, smoking. We don't have a southern accent (we're from Chicago and Cleveland) Apparently, around here, because we do not fit the mould, we are the enemy. This is not normal politics. It is not the usual Republican/Democrat disagree on the issues but we get along and understand that we are entitled to our opinions. It is paranoia, anger and hate. I'm know there are other suburbs around Columbus where we could fit in a little more, but we're over Ohio. We've been here a long time and see how it has changed and we are ready for something new....."searchingforserenity"

This is one thread where I can say it is specifically about politics and their desire to live with like minded people. That is the reason upon retirement I WILL NOT move down to the southern states. That is also the reason why I WILL NOT move to the Harwinton area. I would not take a mansion up in the Harwinton area for free.
Harwinton 60% Trump
Watertown 62% Trump
Thomaston 63% Trump
Wolcott 65% Trump

"SFS" is an artist and her husband works with special needs. I am a Music Therapist (that works with special needs individuals) and an artist. I feel like I know them.

Here is the area I am looking at for the same reason "SFS" is attracted to CT in retirement. My husband was a real bonafide hippie (and still is lol) in the day loves it up in the Branford/Guilford/Madison area. Below is a part of the equation of why we like that area.....I have no doubt.
Branford 59% Biden
Guilford 64% Biden
Madison 61% Biden
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...nnecticut.html

I STAND BY MY POSTS....even the sections that got deleted because as "searchingforserenity stated" "This is not normal politics".
Thank you for the information and for understanding our plight!

I thought the report under "More articles" about the woman stabbed multiple times in Stamford was much more alarming than some knuckleheads in Walmart. I hadn't heard about that one. You just never know.

I was wondering how you were doing especially after the attack on the Capital building.

"Ohio now is a much more red state than it is a purple state," Smith said. "If you look at recent elections, statewide, presidential or gubernatorial, Republicans have done extremely well. I just think that means Ohio has taken a different turn. I think Ohio has shifted a little bit, and it's no longer that middle part of the country — it's probably a little more on the right, traditional, conservative side.............................Many Ohio counties have turned increasingly red since the state supported President Barack Obama in 2012."

I thought Ohio was a swing state but it is not anymore. You must feel/sense that.

I wish people would stop making political affiliation the prime criterion for where to live. If you don't put it out there, most people would never know your political affiliation or leanings.

Most people are not single issue people. Most people are a blend of concerns, straddling the political divide. Just because someone voted for the Republican candidate doesn't mean they are white nationalists. Just because someone voted for the Democratic candidate doesn't mean they are going to mandate "The Internationale" be sung in schools.

The usual factors are quality of schools; ease of commute; local taxes; local libraries; local places of worship; etc. Can we address these? https://www.moneycrashers.com/where-...e-best-places/

Amen to this. The politicization of everything today is noxious and there has been a great deal of ignorance displayed in this thread.

Those are YOUR criteria. Can we agree that people are different and to some people it does matter politically what kind of state they are living in.

"factors are quality of schools"

In "red" states people are adverse to taxes and that affects the schools. I don't have kids in the schools but I believe education is that important and even though my husband is retired we can still give more for the kids. The majority of people in CT THINK THIS WAY and why we are always in the top 10 and many times in the top 5 for schools. THE STATE DOES MATTER.
https://wallethub.com/edu/e/states-w...t-schools/5335

What states are in the top 10 and what states are in the bottom 10?
"local taxes"
Please see above. Local AND STATE taxes for the most part will determine how the states schools are. CT has "Education Cost Sharing" and money is given to the poorer cities and towns. THE STATE DOES MATTER.

This is from your link:
https://www.moneycrashers.com/where-...de-best-places
2. Taxes
It’s impossible to escape taxes entirely, but moving to the right place can trim your overall tax burden. For example, five states don’t charge sales taxes: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Nine states waive income taxes on most or all sources of income: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

Go look up and see where all of those states are in the link I put up with the states with the best and worst schools. THE STATE MATTERS.
School State Ranking (1 is the best and BTW CT is #2 on the list)
#48 Alaska
#22 Florida
#45 Nevada
#6 New Hampshire (my aunt lived there are her property taxes were sky high)
#25 South Dakota
#35 Tennessee
#28 Texas
#21 Washington
#19 Wyoming

BTW there are many wealthy people in CT who WANT TO GIVE MORE in taxes to give those who are less fortunate while there are "religious" people in red states who don't want that. THE STATE MATTERS.

The biggest thing I am seeing right now is all the red states wanting to pass (and some passing) Jim Crow voting laws. HOLY COW THE STATE DOES MATTER.

It all matters because the red states put a heavy tax burden on the poorest in society and some of us think that is just unacceptable and also bringing back Jim Crow laws is just unacceptable.
