Towards the end of the year, I will start searching for a house. Something small, maybe a cape, in the area of 1500 sq ft. I work from home, so I can technically live anywhere.
I used to live in Fairfield (rented a condo), and would love to move back, but the prices are way high. A cape, 3 bdrm, 1500 sq ft. on a smallish lot is going to run me in the area of $375-425. I can afford that, but I am not sure I want to spend that kind of money.
I currently live in Norwich. A cape, 3 bdrm, 1500 sq ft., is going to run me in the area of $150-165. I don't want to live here permanently, tho
I was passing through Guilford last week, and liked it; it seemed really nice. A cape, 3 bdrm, 1500 sq ft, is going to run me in the area of $250-275. That I could see myself doing
Q is - where else in CT should I search? I would like to see myself in a Fairfield/Guilford type area, spending about $275. I don't really have any requirements, other than I don't want to be too far from the hwy. Thoughts?
Where do you work? Are schools important? How far from things do you want to be? Do you want to stay on the coast or would you consider inland towns like West Hartford, Farmington or Glastonbury? Without knowing this, it’s hard to recommend a town.
If you liked Fairfield but can’t quite afford the house you want there, you might want to consider Trumbull. I know several former Fairfielders that moved there for that reason. Milford would be another suggestion. If you liked Guilford, you might also check out Branford and Guilford too. Jay
Since you work from home, I'd move up the coast a bit, it's cheaper and less congested. I would look hard at Clinton, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, East Lyme, Niantic and Stonington.

I could see it too. Guilford is wonderful though its very popular and I'm assuming the low end inventory can get pretty competitive. I think its a great idea. The center is an absolute gem.
The low end of Fairfield? not so wonderful. Can be a little riff raffy in spots as you may know. Its not an elitist view, its the reality of things. It has its place, the public schools are fantastic, great for NY and Stub commuters looking to avoid the Bridgeport and Stratford school systems. Since these factors aren't on the table, makes no sense spending another $100 or more.

Best of luck
“Riff raffy”??? I strongly disagree. Much of my family and friends live in the lower priced sections of Fairfield and they don’t have problems. Those are more working class areas like Tunxis Hill and Grasmere. They may not be as manicured and upscale as some Fairfield neighborhoods but that does not mean they are bad. I can’t think of any real problems they’ve had in the over 100 years my family have lived there. A bike stolen from a garage 50 years ago. A car broken into 35 years ago but nothing recent. I think you are judging these neighborhoods from the comfortable seat of a very affluent town and are making assumptions on what it’s like to live there. Jay

You mentioned something against the Southeastern part of town in another thread. What's your problem with it?

I agree. My sister/brother in law just bought a house in that “riff raffy” section and their neighborhood is very nice. It’s solid middle class and entry level for Fairfield. Many blue collar, hardworking neighbors. To call it “riff raffy” is sort of laughable.
