I don't know how old some of you are but some of you who may have lived thru the disco era might remember an artist Dan Hartman who had a smash hit called "Instant Replay" (he was also part of the Edgar Winter band in the early 70's) in the latter part of 1978

anyway I was reading that "Instant Replay" was recorded in a place called "The Schoolhouse" which looked like an estate and was used by Dan and others who were just starting out and didn't have the resources for a better studio

Is this anywhere near I 95 or Sherwood Island or it more inland?

Dan passed away in Westport in 1994 so i wonder if he lived there for a long time

Dan Hartman lived in Westport for many years. The Schoolhouse was actually the house he rented, lived and recorded from for a while. Click on link- long link, lots of photo sand info but within it there are pictures of The Schoolhouse and of his later home in Westport, where he died. That home was on the Saugatuck River.

157 Riverside Avenue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Studio is long gone. The only high profile studios in the area left that I'm aware of are Carriage House in Stamford and Tarquin in Bridgeport.

Default Schoolhouse Studio

I lived next door to the Schoolhouse Studio, Edgehill Ln. Westport Ct. in 1977-1979. It was rented to Dan Hartman by the Reynold's family. While I was there, he recorded, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Foghat. Patti LaBelle, Peter Frampton, Muddy Waters, James Brown, .38 Special among others.

Jill is correct. Dan was a very gifted musician and a few years ago I did a little search for the Schoolhouse and Dan’s home. The Schoolhouse is actually at 8 Edgehill Rd, in Westport. As Jill noted, Dan did not own this house. His personal home, which he later purchased and built a smaller studio where New Green Clear Blue was recorded I was unable to find, but neither were on Riverside as the REO Speedwagon song implies. One search for Dan’s personal house led me to River Lane, where similar houses exist, but didn’t quite seem to fit. If I do find it, I’ll re-post here.

Apparently 157 Riverside Avenue is where REO Speedwagon stayed while recording in Westport. According to Wikipedia

Last home of Daniel Earl Hartman was 81 CLINTON AVENUE, WESTPORT, CT
The home of Multi-Level Studio as well.

I utilized Ancestry.com and a bit of Google to confirm the information.
I am an intermediate genealogist and tracing loved ones be it personal or well known is something I enjoy.
