Boston or New York. Boston is about a 70 minute Amtrak ride from New London, while New York is about 2 hours away from Amtrak.

Not sure if cost is an issue. I checked NY for them. It is about $75 each way. I am shocked, as they have been running deeply discounted rates well into 2021. I suspect now they are reversing course.

Thanks. Will mention the train track route for him to check out... wonder if new building/development has closed that "path" off.

(Groton is a tricky area to get around in without a car which is why i was looking for an interesting area to jump off a train or bus from that is walkable and has things to see/do)

Hmmm… thinking about places accessible by train… what about Branford - walk around downtown, get lunch, maybe paddle around a bit?

Or Milford - the logistics would probably be more challenging - is Silver Sands accessible by foot from the train station?

I guess Hartford is an option too, although it would be quicker to get to Boston or Providence using public transit.

Silver Sands is a long walk, but a small fare cab ride away.

Silver Sands would be a long 40 minute walk, and it's not necessarily the best beach anyway (nearby Walnut nicer)–but the boardwalk is really fantastic.

But you could just walk around downtown, green, duck ponds, get a drink, get food, hang out, and then walk to Fort Trumbull Beach, which is especially lovely at low tide. 20 minute walk. From there, you can actually walk to the Silver Sands area by coast. On weekend afternoons he could also do the old house tours by the harbor (https://goo.gl/maps/KtrQuZN3ge5hzKzK9)

Of course, Lyft/Uber are easily had in any of these places.

Any interesting cities/towns directly on public transport routes from New London where you could get off and be right in the middle of a great area to walk around in for the day? Maybe interesting architecture, museums, eateries? Or any public transport stops that would be near trailheads to do a little hiking? Or where train/bus would leave you off near a nice, big shopping mall (no casinos)?

All suggestions appreciated! Thanks!
Curious. Did you go somewhere? Was it fun?
