The travel magazine has ranked the top 25 best beaches in the country and Ocean Beach Park in New London made the list.

Travel +Leisure says several criteria go into ranking beaches, including the sand, the waves, how secluded they are, access via public transportation, parking and more.

Ocean Beach Park in New London is highlighted for gentle tides, views of ferries and schooners sailing past the New London lighthouse and the boardwalk.

I love beaches but I've never been there. I wonder what the city is like now because long ago when I was there it didn't feel safe.

To match some of the MA beaches it has to be really good. There isn't much to choose from in CT because so many are private but if New London has come up in the world, I guess I wouldn't mind the drive from central CT to go to a nice beach. Anyway the #2 ranking should bring in a lot of business for them.

Thankfully it's east of the sound, but I can't see where it would match MA beaches, especially the ones that actually face east (nothing like watching the sun rise over the water)

I visited years ago when I was working in the area, and didn't feel there were any safety issues at all.

New London is changing a lot. Ocean Beach (along with many others in CT) definetely deserve to be on that list (and sorry VT but that lake doesn't).

Also, it's possible to see the sunrise from many beaches in CT.

A south facing beach on the sound can’t hold a candle to an east facing open water beach. This is coming from someone who went to a CT beach at least once a week for 20 years or so. Sorry. (I am apparently a beach snob! )

Any list without Cooper's Beach on it should be considered fake news.

I’m a beach guy and no, sorry, nowhere in CT deserves to be on this list. CT can be known for many things, but top beaches isn’t one of them.

This same list has Rockaway Beach in Queens and Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn on it. Both are disgusting. Lol - garbage.

I have been to New London only once a long time ago. While I tended to like that entire area, there isn't anything in particular that has remained memorable of New London (not in a bad way). Yes, that's when I got lost searching for Mystic Seaport, otherwise chances were high I wouldn't drive through much of New London. Interesting that it also has one of the best beaches in the USA. I guess there is more to New London than previously thought.

I can't imagine there would be safety issues on a CT beach. Santa Monica's free camp out beach made the list. If you go for a dip there, your towels and belongings will be gone when you get back. In an instant.

If you ask me, you go to one CT beach, you've been to them all. They don't vary greatly. Some are just bigger than others and we all know how infallible MA can be and that includes all their beaches. They are without question the greatest in all the world.
Travel+Leisure is a reputable publication and it's great to see they recognized CT.

Yes they can (to me).

CT beaches have:

- Warmer water
- Smaller waves (which I prefer, 6 foot waves is just annoying)
- More varied coastal scenery (the entirety of the Cape's east coast is made up of 3 giant sandy beaches that each stretch on for miles. Pretty repetitive).
- Better fishing

Yea, it's a closer comparison than you might think.
