Amazing. This makes me respect Darien a lot more. I really wish someone did this for the Sasco Hill Property...

Wow, good memory. I totally forgot I had posted that. Goes to show I’m the one getting that old. Of course back then it was just being talked about but still you think I’d remember. It’s a family curse though. Jay

Which Sasco Hill property? The former Jack estate at 1143 Sasco Hill Road? That’s the 20 acre direct waterfront estate adjacent to Sasco Beach with five homes/buildings on it. The largest is a 13,655 square foot 1928 mansion. It sold last year for $8.75 million but had an appraisal of $17.7 million. I believe that is the highest appraised residential property and one of the largest taxpayers in town.

It would have been a nice addition to the town but I’m not sure what the town would have done with it. They already have Penfield Pavilion and the historic Burr Mansion for town owned party venues. Plus with the loss of GE’s taxpayer status when sold to Sacred Heart, I’m not sure it would be wise to also remove another top taxpayer from the Grand List. Jay

That’s going to be quite a blow to the town’s tax revenue.

Wait What? I'm confused. Isn't the Great Island already part of Darien?

The listing on Zillow says they pay $26,759. Is that wrong? It does seem low. Jay

Yeah, definitely way too low. Here, it says the monthly taxes are $49k. That would put the yearly taxes at about $589,000, consistent with what jdhall said.

Big revenue loss.

I may be part of a town, but private property. If it’s bought by the town’s government, at least it will be open to all the town’s residents. The town government can do improvements to accommodate the visits (extra parking lot, etc).
