We’re flying into CT in a few weeks and will be staying in Old Saybrook. Our neighbors in Florida will be coming with us to stay for the week. They want to visit NYC since they love Christmas decor, and we are looking for a nice downtown area in CT, preferably one that’s beautifully decorated for the holidays, to stroll and have some dinner.

Guilford comes to mind, as does Essex. But I’m not sure how dressed up each gets for the Christmas holiday.

Any suggestions or experiences?

We love Ridgefield and it came up in conversation. Only downside was it’s a bit further from Old Saybrook than we’re wanting to travel. Good suggestion though.

CT keeps it classy from what I've seen. Downtowns and centers usually just decorate with Christmas lights and businesses might put wreaths on doors. It's not overstated, you won't see giant inflatable Rudolfs or Nutcracker soldiers, those will be in residential front yards.

There were already some decorations up there last week when I was there.

Milford does a decent job with having Christmas lights up the whole green. There's also a tree lit up on at the duck ponds which is very picturesque, and they do a lobster trap tree in the harbor. Strega is great for dinner.

There's a more well known lobster trap tree in Stonington too.

Guilford and Essex, as well as Chester, have the right Norman Rockwell feel, but they don't go too crazy with lights or anything. It's pretty subtle. New Haven does some nice lights too but nothing elaborate. The Luke is a really great new restaurant to bring guests downtown.

Torrington. Cute downtown around Christmas time, and also Carl Bozenski's Christmas Village

I would say Mystic as well.

They do a great deal for the holidays and it has that old time nautical village feel.
