Also missing Van Leeweun in Darien Commons but that's probably because there's never anyone in there.
Mr. Frosty's is the most popular around here, you go there and there's always lines around the corner.
*I didn't get up to Ferris Acres in Newtown yet but I did drive by a place that looked interesting on the main road in Durham last Saturday. I should have stopped

Dari Serv? I've passed too and thought of stopping. Haven't been. Looks like a classic.

God, that place has been there forever. At least 60 years. If I remember they have both soft and hard serve ice cream. It’s been years since I’ve been there but I can’t remember it being outstanding. If anyone has been there recently, please feel free to correct me.

I'd bet they don't make their own, like 90%+ of spots. A few places around here use Buck's and it's actually pretty solid.

A friend from the area said Whittemore in Seymour was always better. Haven't tried.

Walnut Beach is still our overall favorite.
You’re probably the only person in my life I’ve heard say Rich Farm sucks. Our neighbors in Ridgefield would drive there just for the ice cream, passing Ferris on their way.

Never had Walnut Beach but have had Scooby Doo’s, which was absolutely terrible. I’ll add WB to the list when I visit in July.

Interesting. The lady, and my friend from up there both agree it's not great. Also brought a friend along recently that wasn't impressed. Been twice now in last month and both times were below average. Ferris is on another level. Any particular flavors you like?

I wouldn't call Scoopy Doo's terrible, it's Buck's ice cream which is solid. Still better than the Rich Farm we had lolol

The only ice cream I get at Rich is mocha almond fudge. It’s phenomenal. Or did you mean Ferris? If so, I bet the black cherry vanilla.

I can’t remember what I had at Scooby Doo, but I remember thinking “meh”. Always felt the same about Ashley’s.

Scoopy is similar to Ashley's, better than average but nothing worth traveling for... fine if you're in the area.

I will try that flavor at Rich. Give it one more shot.

Black cherry vanilla is great at Ferris.

Scoopy Doo’s is terrible. Doesn’t even make their own ice cream.

As a professional ice cream blogger myself, I wouldn’t say Rich Farm sucks. It’s a good place, but it’s just not comparable to Walnut Beach or Arethusa. Keep in mind we’re talking about arguably the two best places in the whole state that I’ve been to. There are still a number of places I need to try on my list when I come back home this summer before giving official ratings, but I’m pretty sure Rich Farm would be in the Top 10 or Top 15 at the very least.

Out of all the ones I tried, these are my ranks so far:

1. Walnut Beach Creamery
2. Arethusa
3. Salem Valley Farms
4. Rich Farm
5. Ashley’s
6. Bishop Orchard Creamery (I believe they use Gifford’s)
7. J Foster
8. Sunny Daes (pretty average; nothing to rave about)

I’ve been to a few others but just wasn’t impressed at all. These are on my list to try: Ferris Acres, Peaches N Cream, Tulmeadow Farms, Robb’s Farm, UConn Dairy Bar, Grassroots, and Fenwick Ice Cream.

All that to say, I never rate based on flavors or the flavors they produce. I always try a bunch of flavors and then go by quality. One thing that is super off putting to me is when an ice cream place uses artificial ingredients or NOT real flavoring. Like I would never eat vanilla ice cream unless it’s made with real vanilla beans.
