Hi,

My finance' and I are moving to CT from DC in Aug/Sep. She will work in New Haven while I commute to Groton. Middletown seems to be a good central location. We want a charming walkable town/city feel that offers non-box store restaurants, pubs, green space, outdoor activities, and ability to make new friends. Moreover, we would like an area that's not uber expensive. Does Middletown fit the bill? Any other suggestions?

Middletown does fit that description but it would be a long trip to Groton. It would be over 40 miles and take almost an hour. I would suggest checking out Old Saybrook. It is a nice small town on the coast with a nice small downtown area.

The problem is that Groton and New Haven are about 50 miles apart. In between are mostly small towns. The town you descibe would need to be larger. Most of the coastal towns have some sort of downtown area so look into any of them to see what you like best. Jay

With our gas at a statewide average of $4.37, you should try to stay along the I-95 corridor. By considering Middletown, you've made an isosceles triangle lying on one of its sides.

26 miles - Middletown to New Haven (the base)
55 miles - New Haven to Groton (right side)
55 miles - Groton to Middletown (left side)
