Hey Everyone,

I'm moving down to the Fairfield County area at the end of this summer and want to live in either Stamford or Norwalk. I'm in my early 20's (so no kids) and I'm really looking to find out what parts of each city to stay away from. I don't know too much about the area so any insight would help!

Good morning. Stamford has only a couple of areas to generally avoid. The "west side" of Stamford has always been the higher-crime area in Stamford, and shootings can occur near the housing project there. It's rather interesting though, since the west side of Stamford borders Greenwich! The south end of Stamford has some sketchy pockets of areas that are full of mostly laborers and immigrants (illegal or not, who knows). Not so much crime-ridden of an area rather than just a few areas of run-down housing and less expensive housing. The bad pockets' days are most likely numbered in the south end, however.
Luxury housing and a live/work/play concept in Harbor Point is under construction, and aggressive neighborhood development and cleanup seems to be gaining steam daily.
As for Norwalk, generally the bad area is concentrated around Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in the southwest part of town. Any others, I am not familiar with enough to give the best advice.

In Stamford, I would stay out of these areas:

(thanks to Gmaps Pedometer)

I don't know much about Norwalk's unsafe areas, but they would encompass a large swath of South Norwalk.

Also, some areas outlined in Stamford may now be safer than they were several years ago when I lived there. I cast a pretty wide net.

I'd agree with Brattpowered's assessment in general. Although there are some streets and areas in pockets on the east side and south end that are nice. The west side I completely agree with, though. It has some work before being on par with Stamford in general.

Great job and thanks for the tip about the Gmaps capabilities.
If it were me, the only changes i would make would be that i would include maitland and judy on the safe list and exclude crystal/quintard/lafayette right now. However, those streets may lose their sketchiness soon, as there are new condos being built nearby.
Again, great detail bratt!

hi,

conincidentally am looking for an apartment and chanced upon one at the junction of greenwich ave and tresser blvd which is at the border of one of the areas Bratt described.

not exactly sure but i'm guessing this would be considered better than if i were to be right smack in the area itself? and that if i dont venture into the area it would be ok?

thanks

I think I know which you are talking about. Is it the complex on the southwestern corner of Greenwich Ave and Tresser? If so, they look passable but are on the fringe of a very questionable neighborhood. I would keep looking, but that is just my opinion too.
