Thumbs up Litchfield County

I moved to the New Preston / Washington area recently. The people are nice, and wave to you when you pass by. Its great! Its only a two hour drive to NYC. Not bad.

Consider Durham - they don't even have a police officer, it's so small (and beautiful)!

The smallest town in the state is Union. I think the population is around 600 people. Pretty small by CT standards. Jay

Yep. People in Connecticut like to keep to themselves. I lived in a small town for 5 years and very rarely saw my neighbors. I swear, some never came out at all. It was a little weird.

I think you should pick another state. Maybe NC or PA?

Oh, and Litchfield county is the "cow country" of CT... so if you like rural, woodsy, and boonieville-this is your spot oh, and if you go to realtor.com you can look up homes by towns as well as the school systems, economy for that town and so on.
Thomaston and Morris are the only towns listed. The rest (Campville, Northfield, Riverton) are hamlets of towns. Even Winsted is a section of Winchester.

Have only been in CT for five years in the 'quiet corner', and yes, new englanders can be clannish, however, the intelligent, progressive ones welcome outsiders, especially those of their own intellectual level. I have always found that the transplants in any given area I've lived in, are generally the most interesting, the most kind, fun, considerate and easy to know. It is easy to meet wonderful folks at college courses, and museums, art fairs, etc. I have moved over 15 times in 40 some years within Michigan, Indiana and Ct. One thing I learned in each state is that it is true that 'small towns breed small minds". Many are provincial which in my book means narrow minded, stultified and otherwise not open to new ideas, people, whatever.
When I first moved here, it rather bugged me that their heads are still into spinning wheels and the revolution, but at least that new england history gives one a reminder of our great country and what it took to gain freedom from England. Overall, the quality of living here is better than either MI or IN.
Like seems to attract like, be it a small or large town, so if you are outgoing and patient with provincialism, you will meet friends, so don't give up.
