I am a single mom with two kids (11 and 8), and want to relocate to the East Coast area from California. I work for the USPS, so finding a job won't be a problem. My research information has been limited to the internet and library books, and my top choices (without having visited anything north of Virginia/Ohio) are Danielson, Putnam, Daysville, Woodstock in Conn.; or Rockland, Ellsworth, Bar Harbor in Maine; or Keene, Merimack in N.H. Any advice, suggestions, or information of any kind would be so greatly appreciated. I don't need night life or big city entertainment or restaurants. We are a kind of old fashioned down-to-earth family who just needs a good school, safe neighborhood, and not too expensive housing. We would need a place to rent at first, but plan to buy a home as soon as possible. We have cats as pets. I currently have section 8 housing, but will lose it as soon as my work becomes full time. Thanks!

As a worker for the USPS- your best bets would be too stick to a smaller town.

Putman/Dayville in the north eastern part of the state cannot be beat really.

Putnam has around 9,000 people- and is known as the 'Antique Capital of the Northeast. see http://www.putnamct.us/

Putnam is located in the states 'quiet Corner'- it is near Dayville, Woodstock and Pomfret- very quiet small towns in a rural scenic area.

Despite the rural aspect and small towns there is much in the way of culture; be it museums, prep schools (the Pomfret Academy) Wineries, B & B's-plus solitude and peace, with little traffic. There are rolling forested hills and farm pastures. The Woodstock fair is famous around Labor day- the regions also has many famous eateries like the Vanilla Bean in Pomfret, and the Golden Lamb buttery in Brooklyn. Crime is very low in the region

Rents for 2 bedrooms will run $700-1000.00 a month' A new home on an acre for under 300K

Access to Providence RI is less then an hour- as it is to Hartford. Big box stores and mega shopping are in Manchester and South Windsor- 30 miles to the west. Also the University of Connecticut is close by in Storrs. Eastern CT State University is in Willimantic.

The weather will be generally milder then the areas specified in northern New England. In addition the Connecticut and Rhode Island coast/beaches are less then an hour away as well.

Do contact me privately- I live in eastern Connecticut, and know the region well. The climate here is a bit milder then Maine or New Hampshire- for a former Californian, it will be less of a shock in Connecticut.
