I'm a Central New York state resident pondering a possible job offer as a government grunt (state level) in central Connecticut, and I've been researching townhouses in the Hartford/Middletown/Meriden area on Realtor.com and some realtor sites. What fits my budget is something in the $200K range, give or take a little. I'm single and have no kids, so schools aren't a big issue, except for the future resale angle.

Areas I've driven through while interviewing in the area include: Middletown, Cheshire, Simsbury, Windsor(including South, East and -Locks) and Meriden. Beyond what I can tell from passing through and reading online, are these generally decent areas in terms of crime and traffic headaches? Any other suggestions of areas that I've missed?

I've heard that Simsbury and Cheshire are nice areas, but they seem a bit pricey. And Meriden gets trashed quite a bit on these forums, yet the prices seem more reasonable and it's closer to where I'll be working initially. Some of the TH communities on its east side look decent, at least on a drive-through.

Sorry for the length of the post. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Since you appear to be looking for work in central Connecticut, I would have to recommend Middletown. It is a very nice community with a nice downtown area with lots of shops and good restaurants. It is also the home of Wesleyan University. There are a lot of nice condos and townhomes in your price range there and it is very convenient to Hartford, New Haven, Waterbury and even Fairfield County. The West Lake Drive area has a number of apartment and condo complexes that are very nice and convenient to the highway. I highly recommend it. I hope this helps. Jay

Not sure where you'll be located for work, but you mentioned Meriden would be close. Middletown has many condos, as does Newington and Rocky Hill. And $200K in those towns is reasonable for a townhouse style unit.
