What's is a good overnight and day trip that is no more than 3 hours away from CT for a married couple getting a reprieve from the kids for a day?

You might try Newport, RI and tour some of the old mansions previously owned by the elite. There are also some excellent dining options (H20 restaurant on the water is very good and I believe this time of year they have great, off season deals. They close around mid-October so I'm not sure if they're still serving.

As you know, Boston and NYC are a stones throw away. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for though.

The Hamptons on the east end of Long Island are beautiful this time of year, but you're limited to expensive hotels or B&Bs, no chains.

Other areas you can look at are the Jersey shore, the casinos in eastern CT, VT or NH (though many hotels are currently booked up there - I just checked for my wife and her girlfriend), and even up in Maine, but that may be too far.

We always do Newport, RI.
The Cliff Walk along the cliffs is AMAZING! I believe they have a website. Google it, it's very romantic.

We did the cliff walk while we were waiting for our tour of the Astor mansion. It was very romantic and beautiful, can't wait to go back.

I think we paid about $20 to tour the mansion.

Depending on how active you want to be on your day trip, you can try Herkimer NY. There are a couple "diamond mines" in that area that offer camping, kayaking and fishing and you can try your luck at digging up some crystals. There are also museums and cafe's on the campground. It's a nice overnight trip and not very expensive.
