Anyone remember Bloodgood's lollipops off Lexington Ave. in Waterbury, CT? I would love to know if anyone is still making them - if they sold their recipe and any person/company is making them now.

Were they any good? Definitely an interesting name for a store, hehe.

They were delicious! Wish I got their recipe. BTW, that was the name of the elderly couple who made the lollipops and sold them out of their home.

Bloodgood's were awesome. I hear that a nephew or niece may have his molds, but I have an approximation of the recipe. 30 years ago I started trying every hard candy recipe I could find, substituting all sorts of sugar/glucose/fructose combo I could find to get the right flavor. I found a recipe finally that gives me a very reliable "bloodgood" flavor, and when the weather is right and my measurements and thermometer and karma are right, I get a good approximation of the hard crack texture. When karma and co. are NOT right, I get a tooth extracting-menace to the dentally-challenged.

The 'secret ingredient' is added to the sugar and boiled. It aids in preventing recrystallization, much as cream of tartar does. Take whatever SIMPLE recipe for hard candy you have, and substitute 1/4 or so of the water with CIDER VINEGAR. Voila. Bloodgoods.

Submitted for your approval,
Amy

ps - go to the high end of hard crack, and never try this recipe in humid weather.
pps I used 100% regular sugar - no corn syrup necessary (it is added in the first place to prevent recrystallization)
