I didn't see a thread on this but would appreciate a reply. I live in West Haven, CT. I usually take Metro-North from Milford to Grand Central. However, I'd like to go to the Stamford Town Center soon. I know that the distance between the mall and the train station in Stamford is 1.1 miles. Are there taxis or shuttles for people like me who just want to go to the mall for a day? Or should I wear sneakers and hoof it to the mall from the train station? Is it a safe walk?
Thanks!!!

You can easily take a taxi from the station to the mall, but the area itself is not that bad. If you decide to walk, immediately go north under I-95 so that you can walk on the "better" side of town.

It's a super easy walk and I wouldn't even think about it being a "bad" part of town. It's full of white collar people and pretty busy during the day. At night, it's also a very safe area to walk around in. I walk around there with my partner 4 or 5 nights a week after work, for exercise. It's a very walkable downtown.
Or, if you don't want to walk, grab a taxi from Metro North, and it will cost 5-6 bucks.

It's safe to walk to the mall. There are usually plenty of taxi's at the train station. Not at the mall though, of course. So, shop lightly or have the number for a taxi handy.

I am curious as to why you want to go there though. Even with the recent renovations, it's a really underwhelming shopping experience. Unless they have a unique store that you can't find in Milford, or in the city, i wouldn't go out of my way to shop at STC.

Are there sidewalks?

Last time I tried to walk from the train station to PF Changs we found ourselves going under 95 without sidewalks. Maybe we just went the wrong way - I wouldn't put that past us as we were coming back from Happy Hour in New Rochelle.

Leave the train station from Washington Blvd. I'm guessing that you went out on to Atlantic St(which is sketchy in that area behind the train station).

The Stamford Town Center has some excellent stores either in place, or upcoming that CT doesn't have. The restaurants are a great attraction: Capital Grille, PF Chang's, and Kona Grille are CT firsts. H&M is brand new. Barnes and Noble is one of the largest bookstores in CT (if not the largest). Zara just opened in the mall--becoming CT's first location. A JCrew is slated to open, and a new Yankee Candle store, as well as several other food court restaurants and new stores are slated to open in the future. Throw in movie theatres, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Macy's, and I think it is definitely a "destination shopping" experience.

jj, am a huge fan of the QOL of the Greenwich area

But your (accurate) description of the Stamford Mall could just as easily be applied to any mall in Paramus, ShortHills, Plano (TX), Naperville (IL), suburban Cleveland, etc etc....

Mockable that Greenwich area lacks more inspiring shopping and dining, given its rather elite socio-economics...only suburban region w/similar socio-economics is PaloAlto area, where shopping and dining opportunities are slightly better, though still laughable...

Yes, agreed--the mall isn't "special" in comparison to other major cities in the US--it's very similar. I'm just pointing out that it is a pretty special place for folks in CT wanting to visit stores that aren't really present in CT. The only exception being the West Hartford area--that area is a draw for unique to CT stores, too.
