(1) How can someone commute from downtown New Haven to UConn Hartford or UConn Waterbury for evening classes?

(2) Is Hartford or Waterbury an easier commute from New Haven?

Thanks in advance!

Waterbury is substantially closer.
Though neither commute would be a breeze during rush hour 5-630pm.
It would prolly be about 40 min but more in traffic.

Waterbury is about 28 miles from New Haven and would take about 40 minutes. Uconn Hartford is located in West Hartford and is about 42 miles from New Haven and would probaly take about 45 minutes. you can avoid traffic in Hartford by taking Route 9 to I-84 east and then get off at Trout Brook Drive. I would find the drive easier between New Haven and Hartford (West Hartford). New Haven and Waterbury are not directly connected by an expressway; the fastest route (Route 34 to Route 8) involves several traffic signals and passing through downtown Derby, Connecticut.

Jay, I agree with your suggestion about taking Route 9 to I-84 in an effort to avoid Hartford. However, the exit for Trout Book Drive is only off I-84 westbound. For someone traveling on I-84 eastbound to UCONN's campus (coming from Route 9), they would have to exit at Park Road (Exit 43 if memory serves).

Yankee.Peddler - You are right. It is called Park Road. But it is right by Trout Brook Road which is what you would take to get up to UConn's West Hartford campus. Thanks for catching that. Jay

Thanks for the quick responses!

Is there any public transportation between New Haven and either of the UConn campuses? I have a shared car situation and expect to occassionally need a bus or train option...

I do not think there are any direct connections. You should check CT Transit's web site for buses. You could take a train to Waterbury, but it would mean taking Metro-North to Bridgeport and switching to the Waterbury line. Note though that return trains may be limited. Jay

You would think that there would be a market for UCONN to offer shuttle service between their campuses and certain points in the state (e.g. New Haven) -- especially for working students enrolled in evening classes. Maybe they do already; I don't know.

I am a Waterbury resident and I have took a physics class at UCONN Hartford last summer so I know a little about both campuses.

First, I have to say that waterbury should be your first choice. It is 20 minutes from New Haven and there is a bus that goes right from the New Haven green to Waterbury. In fact, it drives right in front of the UCONN Waterbury campus. If there is a bus that goes from New Haven to hartford, it would be a longer commute, and u would have to switch buses once you got to Hartford to the Albany Ave bus to get to the campus, which is actually in West Hartford. You should take this into consideration as you will need to get from class everyday.

I should add that *I am assuming there isn't a bus that goes from New Haven directly to West Hartford. I'm not sure.
