My husband and family are considering moving to the New England area this summer. I have a brother in Albany, NY. That is about it for family there. I would love suggestions on where to live, etc. The cost of living here is naturally way lower than anywhere up there. I just don't want to be SHOCKED with it all once there. We want the following: safe area, good housing, universities close, short commutes, great schools, etc. I am not really interested in anything over 115 K people. I am a speech therapist...he company is national so he is good really no matter where he goes...I would like to be as close to ALbany as possible (west MA or CT). Any ideas? This is very difficult not knowing people already there!

I do not live there, but I know someone that is a Realtor there. If you would be interested in speaking with them let me know and I can put you in touch with them.

If you want to be in a charming town- with many local colleges- Northampton Mass- population 31K you will fall in love with- located on the Connecticut river- about 2 hours from Albany NY. Great Main street, and downtown, great restaurants, lots of art and culture. Low crime, great schools.

Housing prices around 245K median single family home.

If interested in Connecticut- Enfield is about the same distance to Albany as Northampton- nice family oriented town- lots of shopping, and good schools, low crime-around 50K population .Close to Springfield Mass- and the Airport (BDL) with Colleges in both Hartford and Springfield. Housing costs will be slightly less then Northampton.

Default thanks skytrekker

thank you so much for your prompt reply. here is one for you...Southbury, CT??? There is a residential facility for MM/MR population that is offering a GREAT salary for a speech therapy position (although I am not sure at all I am interested in the job itself). What do you know of the town or what (if anything) it is near?
Also, is it true CT has a high cost of living- how does it compare to surronding states?

Thanks again for your help. It means alot.

Lucie

there's been lots of posts here recently about Southbury... just search for "Southbury" on here and you will get lots of info. You will be really shocked at the price difference here.. no way around it. But - as you are seeing, you will very likely earn a lot more too.. so you have to factor that in. There are some good 'cost of living' calculator websites too, that might help you some. Good luck!

Since you have a wide-open field try googling CT Magazine. They rank towns based on schools, affordability, crime and a bunch of other factors. They then compare them in population groups

Not going to happen. Sorry. Maybe a condo, but even then a smaller older unit.

BUT you have to see what your salary will be and then you might be willing to change that figure.

Southbury is a money town...but it doesn't mean you can't commute from further North where you can find more reasonable housing.
