We have just moved to Stamford from Washingon state. My husband works in Greenwich. We have two small children and try to get to know more about the public schools here in Stamford. We have heard about the de-district school system? starts from in 2009? Dose is mean that we do not know which shool our kids will be sent? We are renting a house and schools district is in Newfield now. We are also concern about the school performance. We like being Stamford, but we have been thinking about buying a house in another town where has a good reputation of the schools. Please give us any details info. Thanks.

I would personally buy a home in a neighboring town with better schools if it was me.
But They aren't the worst schools, just not the best either.

Many people in Stamford will send their children to the public schools for their elementary school years and then move or go private for the secondary years. If you are ready to buy though, it might be best to consider where you want to live in the future and focus on that town. I will say the towns in that part of Fairfield County are among the most expensive in the state. The links below though will give you information on the schools in Connecticut. I hope this helps, Jay

IMHO, schools are what we make of them...for the most part. In this case, I can tell you that cousins of mine who most recently finished school in Stamford are now either in good jobs just out of college or in Grad school.

Two were high-honors students at Stamford High and went to very competitive Colleges. One of them just received a nearly full-ride to G.W. Law School (in D.C.).

Another who went to the Catholic High School landed a nice job with a Financial Firm in Charlotte after College. (Before the disaster, so we'll see how that goes)

Two more are still in the Public School system and doing quite well. I can tell you that they all live in the Northern end of Town and 3 out of 4 of their parents happen to be educators who understand that what you get out of most education systems is exactly what you put into it.

Jay is spot-on. I live in Stamford, and this seems to be the sentiment--especially since the new Superintendent of Schools took over back in 04/05. He lives in Brooklyn and commutes up to Stamford everyday. His policies have turned the Stamford school system into a less teacher-focused system, and more of a corporate-focused system. With this, everyone loses.

The high schools aren't terrible at all--as-a-matter-of-fact, they are exemplary compared to many, many states. Just sub-par compared to most of Fairfield County schools.

Of course most of the schools in the rest of Fairfield County are unbelievably high standards to be compared to. Jay

Thanks for the replys. I agree with the comment of Fairfielder that it's all depend on the kids and the parents intentions. However, we sold our house, 4bd/3ba a great house for a family in very nice nighborhood in west coast the end of Oct. We had a lots of showings, yet we could not sell our house to a family because of the not bing in a good school district. a cuople who don't have kids finally bought the house after 10 month being on the market. We really do not want to make a same mistake again. We have been thinkng of Darien, New canaan, Wilton and Ridgefield and visiting different towns every weekends. Stamford is very convenient for us, yet we are not sure about this place espacially hearing about re-district school system? Is anyone know little more about this?

Those towns have excellent school systems, and are very desirable locations. Reselling your home in one of those towns should not be difficult.

If schools are your top priority then Darien, New Canaan, Wilton and Ridgefield would be great choices. Also consider Greenwich, Westport, Weston and Fairfield. All of these towns have great schools and high resale value. Jay
