Hi there! I'm new to this forum, so please bear with me.
My husband is looking to start work in East Hartford, CT in March. We currently live in Newburgh, NY. Looking for a halfway point so that we can still be close to family/friends and so that my husband won't have such a far commute. As far as what kind of town we're looking for....suburban, upper middle class, homes within the 300-400K range, great schools (very important), close to shopping/entertainment. I'm a nurse, so a 10-15 minute commute to a great hospital would also be a help! I'm pursuing my degree...any colleges nearby? Is this so much to ask? haha...
Thanks for taking the time to listen. This is such an exciting, yet scary time. We don't know where to start.
Also, if you could tell us a little about East Hartford..being that my husband should be working on Main Street in March. Thanks so much!

Just to clarify, you are looking for a town that is halfway between Newburgh, NY and East Hartford, CT? The towns are a 2 hour drive apart, with no traffic. Is your husband going to be willing to commute 1+ hours each way every day? Just trying to understand what's the maximum commute time he'd like, so we can suggest the right towns based on distance.

Southington, Cheshire, Marion area are what come to mind for me as they are doable for an East Hartford commute and attached to I84 for the trek back to NY. Any further West and your commute gets pretty bad. They also afford the opportunity to access I691 to 91n to East Hartford and avoid having to get through DT Hartford on I84.

Since your husband is going to be commuting everyday and you wil only be visiting family once in a while, I would recommend living as close to East Hartford as possible. There are many great towns in the area that would suit your needs.

I would first recommend Glastonbury. It is located immediately south of East Hartford and is considered to be one of Hartford more desirable and upscale suburbs. The schools are great (personal experience), it has a lot of nice stores and restaurants and is convenient to the highways so you could get to NY easily.

In your price range you should be able to find a nice 3 or 4 bedroom (about 2,000 s.f.) home on a 1/3 acre lot in a very nice neighborhood. It is also very convenient to Hartford where there are two major hospitals (Hartford and St. Francis) as well as John Dempsey/UConn Medical Center in Farmington and several smaller hospitals nearby like New Britain, Manchester and Middlesex (Middletown). Backus Hospital in Norwich is an easy drive striaght down Route 2 in about 40 minutes as well.

As for nearby colleges there are a lot within 45 minutes. There is UConn, Wesleyan, Trinity, U of Hartford, Central Connecticut State and St. Joseph's. you could even get to schools in the New Haven area (Yale, Central CT, Quinnipiac) in 45 minutes. It depends on what you would be studying for which school would be best. I hope this helps. Jay
