Just curious if anyone has some experiences are recommendations to share regarding GOOD rentals in the central CT area?

West Hartford, Glastonbury, Newington, Southington, Cromwell, Rocky Hill, etc...

Condos, Town-homes, Apartments?

Not in the market to buy, short term (1 year) job contracted assignment in Newington.

Or if anyone on this forum is an Agent that can help or knows of some agents... that would be great also!

TIA

Of the towns you mentioned, it is rare to find rents in Glastonbury and Southington due to their high owner owned residential content (if you find one expect to pay top dollar) Middletown and Cromwell offer more choice in rental capabilities, even in West Hartford...you are likely to find better rent prices due to competition from other landlords.

Westlake area of Middletown. Perfect for what you want and a short hop over to the Berlin Tpk.

@JViello

Westlake area of West Hartford? I assume thats kinda like a section of West Hartford not like a main road right? Like in Seattle we have the Queen Anne district, U district, Freemont, etc...

Looking on a map, what are some bordering streets of Westlake?

TIA

...Westlake section of Middletown...

There are few rents in Southington but they do pop up from time to time. In addition to single-family properties, there are several condominium and apartment complexes.

I showed a client a nice rent (Raised Ranch with central air, fireplace, and above-ground pool) back in November. He decided to pursue something about which he heard from a co-worker instead.

No no, Middletown. It's a "section" yes, more on the Cromwell/Berlin side more than it's Middletown. Right off Exit 21 on I91. You can go RT372 or RT9 to the Berlin Tpk. Work will be about 15 minute commute for you. West Lake Drive or RT217 has complexs on them. (Google maps works great. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=...=1&sa=N&tab=wl it even shows you the NU coplex and the relationship to Westlake)

You can check out the North side of RT372 as well which I think is technically Cromwell. Same deal, just the other side of the street really.

Young professionals, walking/biking trails easy access to everything. Local dry cleaner, wine shop, grocery, movies store, banks, car wash, Dunkin Dnuts, some chain eateries etc etc. There are a few different complexes around there, some newer than others. Check out rent.com and you will see them I'm sure. It's also a short drive to Hartford for nightlife/after hours stuff too. 15 Minutes or so.

Ok...cool, thanks for the clarification. Its those "sections" type of things us out of state people aren't always aware of!

Yeah, I saw some decent stuff in Middletown on Rent.com and Apartmentguide.com. Then I crossed them with Apartmentratings.com to read some reviews.

Craigslist has some good stuff, unlisted otherwise. Large homes made into two or three apartments. Cool places. I like the whole hardwood floors & brick walls thing. Much more character than track homes in stepford communities IMO.

Haven't found to many places with garages though, would be nice to have. Some nice 3 tier town homes with garages in West Hartford I saw online too.

So whats the skinny on Lyme disease? Cockroaches? I saw some comments on the apartment boards talking about roaches. Yeah, I know...Im a west coast weenie! But roaches....no can do! I'm sure its isolated, can't imagine their everywhere like some of the disheartened renters were claiming.

Lyme disease...get that from ticks right?

TIA

Yea the nooks and "sections" are tough for an outof towner for sure.

Few points:

1. Roaches. Only the low rent places will be affected if you know what I mean. I think I've seen three roaches in my life here. You want roaches? Go to FL ...oh that's right they renamed them palmetto bugs dowh there.

2. Lyme disease. It's only named Lyme disease because it was discovered here. It does come from ticks and I've never met anyone with it and only heard of a few people who had it. Unless you are going bushwacking (And even then you just check your stuff) I wouldn't worry a thing about it. Moreover, not every tick carries Lyme disease. Only deer ticks and then not all of them!

3. If you are looking for more old school bricks and such charm, West Hartford is best - The West side of Hartford (Bordering W Hartford duh...) has a lot for you as well.

The complexes in Westlake are the "newer" places with the pool, workout room, clubhouse etc. Not something you see on the cast of Friends. That's more West Hartford - Hartfords W side. Check out Clemens Place http://www.clemensplace.com/west.html (broken link) for an idea of the Westside of Hartford.

Good luck!

I have lived in plenty of rentals in CT and have only had roaches in one place, which was caused because the apartment was recently renovated and the landlord had things in storage he brought in the house which is where they picked up the roaches. He took care of it quickly and it wasn't a big deal. There is probably a really slim chance of you encountering them.

As for Lyme disease, I know two people who have had it, both of which were people who did a lot of work and other activities in the woods. If you are spending time in the woods, just use a deet based repellant (like Deep Woods Off) and check yourself when you get home. I do tons of hiking and never have had a tick on me. It really isn't an issue for people who don't spend time in wooded areas. Even should you get bitten by a tick that carries it, it is easily caught early (weird rash and flu like symptoms) and a course of antibiotics will get rid of it. Problems only occur when people ignore all of the signs of the disease.

For the charm you are looking for, I agree with JViello: check out W. Hartford and the bordering West End of Hartford (think Univ. of Hartford and UConn Law School area). There are some gorgeous old buildings there.

I almost and totally forgot about several areas in Manchester that would fit your needs PERFECT. There are a ring of old mills turned into aparments in the historic and victorian Cheney disctrict of Manchester. I was there this morning visiting friends and it hit me.

They have exposed brick on the inside, 12' ceilings, large wood beams, walkable areas near to downtown, excersize rooms, pool etc but they are in classic remodeled and gorgeous silk mills. The pricing is very reasonable too. Under $1K a month gets you about 1000sf with a loft etc.

Your Bimmer will fit right in with all the young professionals who work in Hartford and live there - Provided it's at least an M3 with some sack and not a limp 330i. LOL (I'm into cars myself too. )
