There are too many Connecticut's to say what the "classic" town is. I'd say Litchfield Hills though, if you're talking about the stereotype. Roxbury, Washington Depot, Litchfield, Cornwall, etc.

I grew up on the water and Long Island sound was my playground. I associate New England with water. Mystic, Old Saybrook, Stonington, places like that make me think of New England.

Even though it's not in CT, Nantucket, to me, represents an old New England town. The whaling museum, walking down a cobblestone street to get an ice cream cone, clapboard houses covered with rose trellis.....

Hollywood version of CT would be lower Fairfield County or Litchfield. But I am not so sure people in the middle of the state or eastern CT would agree. 169 towns and 169 versions of classic CT!

Point well taken. My apologies. Classic New England with the white clapboard houses, fall colors etc would be Litchfield. Sea-faring New England would be Stonington with Essex,Guilford, Noank and parts of Mystic ranking high also.

I am a bit concerned, however, that you coming from Southington would not lock your doors and lower windows at night. Chester or not, there are nutcases out there everywhere. I am not saying that Southington is bad but Meriden can be and it is right next door! I disagree, do you think anyone that has mal-intent comes to a door where they are about to commit a crime, and say, "Darn it, it's locked?" More home invasions occur through locked doors than opened ones, the fact is it isn't the lock, it is just the bad luck of the draw. If someone picked your house, locked door, or unlocked door, they are coming in!

Has the look but somewhat contrived because of the tourist shops (to the near-exclusion of practical stores i.e. you can buy lampshades or golf sweaters but not a hammer on Main Street): Mystic, Essex, Old Wethersfield, Old Lyme

I like the drive from Branford to Old Saybrook and up the CT River Valley. All nice small towns, old New England "feel" town centers.
