I did some quick math and realized that as a renter no matter where you live if you continue to commute to work in NYC your monthly living expenses would be roughly the same. A huge saving in rent, say in Fairfield, is offset by $300-400 increse in monthly commuting costs plus the cost of operating a car.
I'd like to hear from those who recently moved out of the city. Do you see a huge difference in other expenses such utilities, groceries, eating out, etc.?
This assumes that you do not have a car in Brooklyn but you will in Fairfield. You could live without a car in Connecticut too. You might also consider that there may be times when you need/use a car for other purposes, so you should consider either car rental costs in Brooklyn or the cost to have a car there as well.
As for food, it all depends on how you shop. You can save here as you can in Brooklyn. Same for going out to eat. Overall I would say there is a slight savings her ein Connecticut but not much. Utilities are probably about the same too depending on the place you live. An old drafty apartment verse a newer energy-efficent one will make a lot of difference. You can find both of these type of apartments in either locaiton.
I guess it all comes down to what way you want to live. If you like the big city, then live in the big city. If you want a quieter life, then live in a less urban area. No matter what the savings, not liking where you live will mean nothing even if you are saving a few $$$. Jay

I don't think that you can make a direct comparison like that because the 5 boroughs seem quite different compared to anywhere in CT. A more valid comparison would be costs of living in Westchester County vs. Fairfield County. Also, imo, a better comparison to costs in the city, would be the costs over the bridge in NJ.
Black rock is not in the Town of Fairfield. Black rock is a section of Bridgeport adjacent to Fairfield. Of course when you say Fairfield, do you mean Fairfield County? To answer your question, I think you could get more than a 1 bedroom for $1,200. Check craigslist.com or Realtor.com for listings. Jay

Hi Ct2NY,
I just wanted to point out that you need to factor in your Fairfield costs the car tax. Also, make sure the place you'd be considering includes heat and water, sometimes these are not included if you are renting an apartment in a multifamily home. You can live without a car in CT but only in the cities (the Blackrock area of Bridgeport has public transport).
Supermarket food is cheaper in NYC than in Fairfield. I think eating out is less money here in Fairfield cty but it all depends what kind of restaurant you'd be going. Take out I feel is cheaper here, specially when you use coupons which come all the time by mail. Electric costs are about the same.
I think you should also put some money value to the travel time. How much is worth saving hours of commute? To me, is worth a million therefore I am going to change my name to CT2NY soon
